Hi Guys,

I messed up my threads and I need to clean them up. Should I get a die and clean them up or take it to DLASK? Also, if you say die. Where can I get one in the vancouver area? I searched Fastenal's site and it didn't bring up any dies in this size. Home depot has a generic set but it doesn't say if this die is in there.

Sorry. Getting over the norwalk virus, so it's the bedroom or the bathroom for me. Have to keep clear of the family. Maybe tomorrow I can venture to the safe.

I was trying not to be specific but since you asked. yes. it is. I can't thread the brake on at present. I'm hoping a die would fix her up. I was also trying to reach BC Tactical to get a brake with a lock nut so I don't have to mess with the dang set screw, which I think I lost between moves anyways. I think they made one like that previously. I haven't shot her in a loooooong time. I want to put her back in order and stretch her legs.
 
I got my wife to take a crappy cell phone pic. If you can see the set screw obliterated the thread in that area. Theres another section that looks stripped too. I don't think it's as bad. I finally put her all together. I just want to get a proper brake solution.

If it were mine I'd try with a thread file (because I have one). They are certainly easier to come by than the die required. The die will work quite well and fix this up nicely. Either will work well if you know how to use them.
 
I am not too skilled with a file. I figured a die is a little more automatic. I think I will hunt around for the die first. I'm glad you guys think it can be fixed easily.
 
So, no luck at Fastenal or Home Depot. Im turning to amazon. Anyone know what diameter die I should be getting? Should I just measure thread to thread?
 
Try searching for an industrial tool supply outfit. If you were in southern Ontario, I could help you out. You have an Aucklands/grainger at 150 west 4th ave. Try them, I bet they could at least point you in the right direction.
 
M14X1.0. EBay has them for cheap. Just be sure you don't get an M14X1.25 for spark plugs. These are more common but the wrong pitch. However I second the file fix. Its an easy job, just have a look at the buggered parts and gently remove any high spots until they're level with the rest of the thread. A triangle file would work if you don't have or can't find thread files. Take your time and be gentle, you'll do fine.
 
You might try either kbc tool or acklands-grainger, iirc they both have locations on Annacis island. Both are more of an industrial tool supply than HD. If you strike out start looking for machinist supply shops, they should be able to source one for you.

You can also get adjustable thread chasing tools that fit any size:

Also, Canadian Tire may have this singly or as part of a set as 14x1 is a standard fine metric thread.

Don't think you'll find a die for that. Threads look rounded for one and probably metric. Neither Fastenal nor Home Depot will have anything that's even close.
If you don't go with Can-Am's suggestion, a light touch with a jeweller's file will fix it.
