Hello,

I have a friend with a Haenel rifle in 8mm. We both needed more precise background info on this firearm ( approx. value, model, etc... ). I'm not sure if this is a military rifle per se or a sporterized version. Any feedback would be appreciated. I have included pictures. Thanks!

There was a real good article in either Handloader or Rifle magazine a bunch of years back on the Haenel firm, the Author was a Mauser collector and Authority and was asking for any help on different models that readers could share?
The only info I have is they were made in Suhl Germany between 1925-1940. Made mostly bolt actions, drilling a and SXS shotguns.
Quality was on par with firms such as Sauers,Krieghoffs, which is high prays!
The main bolt action they built wee a Mauserish based rifle:
Mauser-Mannlicher sporting rifle which had M-88 Mauser action,22 or24" octagonal barrel,Mannlicher box magazine ,double set triggers, raised rib on barrel, leaf sight, sporter stock in 7x57,8x57R, and 9x57R.
The other model is the 88 Mauser Sporter-similar to the Mauser-Mannlicher , with a Mauser type 5 shot magazine.

Hope this helps, Dale Z!

Its an 1888 action (Gew or Kar 88), that has been cleaned and scrubbed, then redone. Its a nice looking basic rifle, and looks like it has the chrome plated bolt, the Kar 88 handle bolt. These rifles are reworked old military actions, and even in their day were the budget guns. Personally I think this one is one of the nicest I have seen, nice clean lines, not the normal cheap adornment you see on most of them.
That said their value isn't high, realistically 3-400$ at best..
I for one view the action and barrel as being the best part of this gun, nice looking barrel and sights, nice clean action. I for one would love to have that, drop it in a new stock and make a nice little custom gun.

The now former owner figured it was worth about $400. It belonged to an older gentleman who is trimming down his collection. He asked me to "broker" a package deal with a local enthusiast who has set up a firearms business ( who more than likely sells to people on here. ). I took photos and catalogued everything and fired off everything via email to the buyer. I was querying for two reasons:

1) I had never seen one of these before and was quite curious.
2) If I'm going to be an intermediary, I'm going to remain objective and look out for both parties' interests, which means actually understanding as much about the firearms involved as possible. This was a new one. I'd never seen one of these.

One thing I did notice is it appears to be clip-fed like a garand.

If you're interested in it, PM me and I will provide you with the current owner's contact info.
