Hi guy's , well I have found out that Ar's are kinda over whelming when you new to them lol. So many manufacturers to choose from and then so many ways to purchase one, build your own buy one someone has built, buy one from the store ready to go...
I would like to build my own ( for my own reasons , learning understanding etc..)
I noticed they sell lowers stripped and also 80% . Just curious the opinion or direction in which the experienced guys would go as far as choosing which manufacture offers a high quality lower stripped or 80% .

As far as I am aware, Dlask is the only one who has sold 80% receivers.

That said, it is not worth it unless you're doing something custom like putting in certain types of ambidextrous controls. For what purpose are you considering getting an 80% receiver?

Finishing an 80% will probably cost you around $300 if you can even find a smith who knows how to do it properly. In most cases, unless you know someone who will work for free, it's cheaper and easier to shop around for aftermarket parts that do what you want.

If you're just after the experience of building an AR, get a stripped receiver. That's what I did, and it was quite a bit of fun.

Depending on exactly what you're looking for, Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply offers some very fancy stripped receiver sets, or complete rifles, however it all depends on what type of AR you're building and what specific style you want.

One Shot Tactical Supply offers LMT components, as well as Ranier Arms, and some BMC as well, which are all very nice.

My own personal one is from Motiuk Manufacturing, from their now-discontinued line of custom engravings. They're soon expecting a laser engraver if you wanted to decorate your Ar.

One thing you could do is look through the AR-15 sticky at the top of the black rifles subforum, and a few other threads, and find things you like the looks of and ask what make/model they are.
 
Humm, an 80% lower will require you to do all the remaining milling with the help of a jig unless you have access to other milling machinery. How does one register an unserialized 80% lower?

If you are referring to a stripped lower, there are a lot of options like Stag, Aero Precision, Rainier Arms, Daniel Defense, Motiuk, ATRS, Hera Arms, STI etc. etc. If you're a hands on kinda person, have at her. It's not very difficult to build your own if you have all the tools.
 
Not sure youre aware, but 80 percent lowers are not lowers per se....they require a good amount of milling and finishing to even be able to accept parts.

If youre looking for a high quality ar lower, atrs is probably at or very near the top....expect to pay top dollar for it as well

.a serial number has to be added, the cfo recommends this with a electro pencil....once that is on, it can be registered....all homemade ar receivers are registered under the same frt number
 
A lower is a lower (unless is an NEA, then it's crap:nest:). A good quality barrel, BCG and trigger, that's where to spend the money. That's your base unit. After that you can customize till your wallet cries uncle
 
any opinions on the NEA stripped lower/uppers?

"unless is an NEA, then it's crap" out of spec? poor finish?

Hi thanks for the advice I very much appreciate it, I'm looking to learn and not have to ask so many basic questions some of you will hate lol..
I'm a 5-7 axis CNC aerospace machinist so milling precision military engine parts , guns missiles etc as well as stuff for NASA , on million dollar machines is what I do daily :)
However I completely miss understood what 80% means and although it would be a snap to do for me I have no interest. I thought the lower was already 80% finished with the next kit in it , not just 80% milled only lol... ( newb sigh..)
That being said i know know I will purchase a stripped lower , also does a stripped lower come registered and all legal for me in Ontario?
And I guess I will ask another stupid question , a lower comes full machine and ready to install a kit you would buy to finish the lower ?
I'm also thinking that building one is a great way to full understand it appreciate it and respect it.
The purpose is right now is nothing more that to learn to become a great shooter with it at the range to start.. However I want to build a very nice quality one mil spec and obviously looking the tac part lol .
There are 2 at my local store one is 900 the other is 2500 , the 2500 is sweet ans so much more solid and not um free or loose..
 
The lower receiver is the "Firearm" and the part that is controlled/registered. When you buy one from a store or private sale, it will be registered to you and you will get a registration certificate showing that it is restricted and a receiver only. Once you build it into a functioning firearm, you're supposed to notify the CFO and they will make the appropriate change on the registration and send you a new certificate.

Buy a stripped lower and a lower parts kit and watch a couple YouTube videos. They are pretty simple to put together for the most part, but there are a couple tricky parts. This is were some of the specialty tools will come in handy (Pivot pin detent tool for one). Build it in a room without much clutter... it makes it a lot easier to find the springs and detents when they go flying past your head! Lol (Wear glasses when putting them in)

What kit would you purchase after buying a stripped lower?
I'm assuming its a trigger and springs package..
 
and stock kit (stock, tube, end plate, lock nut, spring, buffer) which typically don't come in the LPK...you'd really want a lower build kit but finding them is problematic as most places here sell the LPK and stock kit separately.

As for stripped lowers, not all are created equal. The price escalates as the machining/finish quality goes up. Companies like KAC, HK, Noveske, Mega Arms charge more because their lowers are practically works of art. NEA I'd not consider just because of the 6061 material used (I know, I know...but this is my opinion). The rest seem to fall in the middle ground and are fairly nice (and made of 7075). Through IRunGuns you can get a very nice Black Rain Ordnance for about $250 all in (milled billet, very nice). Or go more economical and get an Anderson lower for about $125 all in. You could even get a Stag or Core15 for slightly more. Lots of options.

what parts if any are can be or are worth ordering from brownells?
I liked their lpk that did not include trigger group $30
is anything under 100$ ok to import?

Say what? Where is that on their website? I'd be tempted to start another build at that deal. lol
 
I'm just going to mention here that P&D quite likely still has some Daniel Defense lower parts kits. Slightly more expensive than others, but it's guaranteed to prevent #### loss.
