xcr-l vs. m96

I like it. M96 is unique, but the XCR is more adaptable. Both take AR mags, but the XCR has the obvious advantage or rails for optics, accepts AR pistol grips and has a good aftermarket for stock adapters. The M96 does have aftermarket options, but not as many. Stormwerkz is worth checking out for M96 rails etc.

M96 is interesting indeed but I wouldn't buy one simply because of [probable] lack of legacy support. As already stated, the XCR is way more versatile and adaptable.

I have both.

My m96 just sits in the safe. Hard to find any parts if something breaks, so I leave it at home. I love the m96 though, if parts were more available I would use it more. If you like collecting black rifles get an m96. If you're looking to use your .223 a lot and hit up the range every weekend then get the XCR. Caliber swapping is a bonus too.

While there are calibre change kits for the xcr.... The xcr can't do this...

Wish I had this conversion.

....and neither can the M96...

The biggest issue some had/have with Robarms wasn't just the beta testing they left customers to do on the M96 (which design is a fantastic small arm based on unobtanium), but the fact they essentially left owners high and dry when they switched over to the XCR.

Um, that IS an M96. They came 3 versions, and that is one of them. The M96 is slightly modular. It uses the same mag well for both bottom feed and top feed. You can see the attachment points. I believe it uses the same upper receiver as well.

Here is the top feed conversion kit...

Have both. If you don't have an M96 it's hard to understand, but the logic of the XCR's practicality is dwarfed by the M96's pure, distilled awesome.

I found an M96 for the right price. I like unique guns in the safe. The XCR is still on the want list though. I see them as different styles all together. The XCRs I've shot feel more AR-ish. The M96 to me feels more FAL like. I know they are two totally different calibres, just the genre look I guess. Hard to explain.

Yeah, I see from my google search an ad from a few years ago a guy wanting 10,000$ for his 'Bren' conversion.
I must have confused the Bren conversion with the belt-fed conversion that never happened.

Anyhow, it seems to me Robarms would do well to have continued to produce these things - tooling and know-how is already there.

I agree. I like it. People often compare the XCR to M96 but they are two different concepts. Maybe one day they'll revive it, but I don't think it will happen for a while. They are still trying to get the XCR to where they want it to be.
