17 WSM in a 1885 winchester low wall

Hope the WSM makes it... there is not much else you could do with an oversized rimfire frame/barrel... would be a pretty paperweight...

Stock up on ammo and post a range report.

The frame/recievers being used for the 17wsm are the same as the 22Hornet, 17Hornet,223rem.

They certainly look nice. Having an original low wall that's been rebarreled in 22K Hornet I may have a biased opinion though ;)
The barrels could be rechambered for 17 hornet,17 fireball or the likes I would imagine.

What about firing pin location??? Rimfire vs. Centerfire??? I doubt that they are using an offset chamber/bore...

Kind of early to worry about how the guy is going to rebarrel/rechamber his rifle...he hasn't even shot it yet! :)

But, if worse came to worst, wouldn't the easiest answer be to cut a smidge off the breech end of the barrel and then rechamber to .17HMR? Or is there some difference in rim diameter that would also necessitate changing the firing pin location? Just wondering out loud, OP...I hope your gun is a shooter. It is lovely!

Very nice. It's a shame more manufacturers haven't stepped up with offerings. I have heard that ATK who owns Federal and CCi is looking to produce Ammunition.

Has anyone sat down with the dimensions of the rimfire .17 WSM, and the similar sized centerfires and compared? Can it be cleanly reamed out to a .17 Ackley Hornet, or a .17 Hornady Hornet?

Those would be some logical choices suitable for the same rifles. Well, maybe not for the B-Mag, but...

At least a fella knows for sure that there will be residual value in a Low Wall. Worst case would be a breech block or firing pin conversion, as I think that simply changing the length of the link may not be copacetic on the 'new' 1885 actions, but I have not dug into one yet. Anyone know?

The B-Mag, which really does not appeal to me, looks more like it's only 'back-up' option would be to make it in to a single shot in .17 HRM or such. Dunno if it's constructed well enough to risk a higher pressure CF round.

Cheers

these new 1885 win /browning are sturdy little actions and do come in a large selection of calibers .I currently have 22 lr ,22mag ,22 hornet ,17hmr and the 17wsm .The block is different between cf and rf but don't see a problem if a person wants to convert it to cf .The 17wsm is a shag smaller than the hornet and if it is really a dud that is an option ,but first will have to try it out before I get carried away on a plan B
Cheers Peter
