I am just curious since I bought an M&P core 9mm for my gaming needs, what is the general rule of thumb as to what if any mods I can do for the main class without being bumped into Open. I am pretty sure a dot on it will put me into open, but aside from that. I will be using a 14.5 inch AR and probably an old wingmaster my Dad just handed down to me, modified a bit of course. Can I use a Semi shotgun and not be put into Open?

If I need the black badge done to run events from Prince George to Peace River where abouts do I go to get that?

Still Need a lot of stuff. More mags, holster, some sort of belt, shot shell carriers, and practice. Need an optic or irons for the AR yet. And to find a barrel for my 870. Too much to hope for one in the 20 inch range threaded for chokes already?

don't over think the equipment... you will do fine with what you have, keep it simple. most courses of fire will not exceed 30 rounds rifle/pistol/shotgun, for shotgun I just use a dump pouch from maxpedition, that way I grab 2 rounds at a time and slam them into the mossberg, hold my ar15 mags on a double mag pouch on my belt and the pistol mags in the same double mag pouch I use for everything else.

I have been thinking of updating to a chest rig or a battle belt with suspenders though just to get some weight off the hips... there are options, but the number one priority is to get out and shoot first, then finger *uck the gear later.

If you're looking at what mods/tweaks you can do to various firearms and not get bumped, three gun tends to be fairly liberal compared to the IPSC/IDPA rules. You would need to read the rule set of any match you are going to be attending as there isn't really a universal set of rules for 3 gun that is commonly used (a few groups are trying, but since so many 3 gun matches have been started as outlaw matches many variations exist).

Generally speaking, most matches will have divisions based on whether you are shooting iron sites or optics on your rifle (tactical optics or tactical irons is the most common name in the US for these divisions). Occasionally a non-magnified red dot will also be grouped with iron sites. The other major division is often whether you are shooting .223 (Tactical division) or .308 (often called Heavy Metal or He-Man division). Optics on a pistol or shotgun will almost always be allowed only in open divisions, and use of a bipod or shotgun speed loaders will also usually mean open. Compensators on rifles are often okay if they are less than 1" diameter and 3" in length, but usually any comps on pistols or ported shotgun barrels/chokes will mean open as well.

Heavy metal usually also specifies handguns of .45, and usually 12g pump guns. Most of the time tactical divisions can run any calibre of pistol (9mm minimum typically) and either a pump or semi- shotgun.

Generally tweaks such as trigger jobs, grip tape, aftermarket parts (grips, sights, hammer,e tc) etc are not really restricted as long as the firearms remain safe and serviceable.

As I said, you will need to look at the specific rule set for any matches you are looking at going to to make sure you aren't doing something they will disagree with, but what you have right now will certainly work until you've shot a couple of matches and seen what works. Don't go crazy with too much gear at first - see a few matches and ask what others are using to get a sense of what's available and how well it works. I typically run a bladetech holster, AP custom load 2 and load 4 shotgun shell holders and fastmags for rifle/pistol mags.

If you are looking at shotgun barrels, 24-26 inches are the most common lengths as the give a good site radius and some weight to help with recoil but are still fairly mobile and easy to run with. Threaded for chokes is definitely a plus if you can get it, but a modified or IC barrel will probably be fine for most things you'll do in 3 gun.
If you are going to get optics for an AR, red dots like an Eotech/Aimpoint with a magnifier are good choices if you shoot mostly to 100-200 yards primarily, or a variable power scope (1-4x or 1-6x are the most common usually) will work well out to 300-400 yards.

Welcome to the sport and have a blast!!

I would recommend bringing what you have and buy some gear after you experience a match. People may have a piece of kit you like and you may not know that until you see or try it.

Thanks all. I need some optic for the AR, the one on it just isn't bright enough for outdoors, so I have to decide if I want to go with a quality set of irons, or a quality optic first. The handgun is fine, and the stoeger shotgun is good to go. The 870 needs a barrel, it is 30 some odd inches long full choke. I think that old wingmaster would be more reliable in the long run than the stoeger, if I find the right barrel.

Shotgun is shotgun they all run. Spend the dough on a good optic for 3gun. Somthing that runs 1x power with dot for sure.

Peace Country Fish and Game 3 Gun dates confirmed for July 12 and the Two-Man Team Match October 4.

We're exploring options this year for staggered squad start times and limits to shooter numbers due to the range setup. We will be requiring pre-registration and will be introducing divisions.

Psyched to be coming back again this year!

Lookin GOOD Steve!

Thanks.:)

Below are the 4 divisions we intend to try in Peace River this year. There has been some discussion of FSJ using them as well but I don't know if they have made a final decision on that. They will be in use for the team match.

Sorry for the crappy quality, it's a hack cut-and-paste job from a Word doc into JPEG format so I could host it on Photobucket. Hopefully the details are visible to all.
