The best wind detector I have found is Milkweed.Get pods off milkweed as soon as they start to crack open, keep them dry, carry one in your pocket. To use pluck one "pachute" remove little brown seed, and release it. Removing brown seed, makes it even lighter. You can watch them in open for 100 yds or more, they will detect thermals, and wind.Watch them as they come to bluffs, field edges, even trails and openings, it's a learning experience.Every area I hunt for last 20 years has some growing there, that I dropped.Farmers hate milkweed, it's a noxious weed, so if you are hunting agricultural land ALWAYS remove seede before releasing. It's far better than powder, which you can see for only a few feet.Where the milkweed goes, your scent is going, and you WILL have scent. I can send pics by email only. deerdr@nbcsmail.com. My grandson just reminded me, even when there is no wind, there is air movement.....Thermals...

I have used milkweed, thistle down, cat-tail fluff, a down feather from a hole in my jacket, a bit of fuzz from a polar fleece vest, whatever was available and would float for awhile on the air currents.

I tie 16" of dental floss on the front sling swivel on my rifle and when you let it hang down it will trail out in the direction the air is moving. I tie a couple feet on the ariel of my truck so if I am sitting in it I can see the wind direction.

I don't use scent covers much but pay some attention to the wind direction.

I'm going to try a MIO water flavour container rinse out dry and filled with flour.
Not really something that will float in the air a long way, but worth trying I guess.

Cat tail sounds like it'd be available almost everywhere. There used to be a lot of milkweed in the Georgian bay area when I was a kid (70s) but it pretty much disappeared. Kind of forgot about it until you reminded me - it was cool stuff.

I can see the milkweed for close to 100 yards on a good day, how about your cornstarch?

Jeez, cabin fever must be set right in if we're having a pissing contest over wind indicators.

No, I can't see it that far and I don't need to. Corn starch works just fine while spotting deer from 100-150 yards away and putting the stalk on for the 10-15 yard shots I love to take. ;)
