Just starting to get into 3 gun on a budget and wondered how this shotgun would fair in this discipline?

Thoughts?

My mistake on the barrel length.
It is available in a 24" and you can shoot 2 3/4" all the way to 3 1/2" through it.
It comes with a set of chokes (IC, C, F) vs a fixed cylinder bore in the mossberg
Add a mag extension to it and you are set.

That Mozzie 500 Tactical will work just fine, and you could easily win matches with it. For shotgun especially, as long as you've got a reasonable firearm it almost always comes down to the driver.

But honestly you won't really know what features you want until you gain some experience. For that reason, unless you REALLY know what you want in advance, I would go with a bare-bones version while you are getting your feet wet.

Personally, I wouldn't want those sights, that barrel, that forend, that pistol grip, or that buttstock on my 3-gun shotgun. But all of those are a matter of personal choice, and YMMV: Going into my second full season of 3-Gun, I run a polished 99% bone-stock 870 Express Tactical, and I know for a fact that upgrades to the shotgun are not the most efficient way for me to spend money or time on improving my performance. Spend money on ammo carriage systems and practice ammo!

What are your reasons for this recommendation? That is a 3 1/2" action with a 28" barrel and only holds 5 rounds.

You are likely to regret having a railed fore end, and a pistol grip stock gets in the way of doing load2 or quadload.

3 1/2" guns have bigger loading ports and a bit more metal to act as a recoil dampener, so even in a pump it's not a bad thing.

Yes, you'd still want to put an extension on a Nova/Supernova, so the end price would not be the same, but IMO you'd end up with a much more suitable gun.

The reason I asked was because I bought the Mossy as my starter 3 gun shotgun, and for the most part agree with what has been said about it so far.

The railed fore end is not useful for me, and I have been bitten by the rails when I've been in a hurry. I do like the mag capacity and the price though. The stock? Meh. I could take it or leave it. I do like the sights for slugs. I don't want to put optics on mine and have to run with the Big Dogs. LOL.

Having removable chokes might be useful if I used the shotgun for anything else, but I don't.

Definitely the thing that I have found that has the most impact on my scores is not ####ing up. LOL. Plan out your stage and don't forget to engage any targets. That really flusters me and throws me off. The next thing would be to practice loading the shotgun and mag changes on the AR.

I only did a couple matches last year, but plan to do more this year. I'll probably change my kit at some point in time this year when it comes to ammo storage and might change out the shotgun next year.

Too much fun! Talking about it is getting me antsy to go again!
