I was a M305 doubter, forgive me....

For many years I arrogantly looked down on the M14 platform (yes even the Springfields), but only because my first love is the FN-FAL.

Through a great CGN I received a SOCOM18 and I must humbly admit it is a well thought out and designed rifle. In my humble opinion it is far from being as well engineered as a FN but in reality this is the best affordable Battle Rifle on the market that we can buy.

I own two FNs that will die when I do, I love them but the reality is the M-305 is a sweet rifle.

Tank welcome to the addiction! I said it here before and I'll say it again, I'd take the M-14 any day of the week over the cheek slapper. If you like stretching out a bit prone over irons you will get where I'm coming from.

I like the classic look, bare with a decent wood stock, no optics. My old eyes can't shoot irons worth a damn though. Both of my AR10's cut cloverleafs right out of the box. That's when I sold both my m305's. Even the one fully done up with Krieger barrel, JAE stock, all the little tricks for accuracy and optics, and it still wouldn't touch the armalites:nest:. And since I'm still not rich (although I deserve to be) I couldn't afford to feed 4 .308 semis, so they went. (sorry hungry). But damn they still look like a real gun

You are using optics on the Armalites I take it?

Plastic .22s?

Fifty years ago I trained on the Garand in Basic Training. When I got to my TO&E unit in Germany, I was issued an M-14.
Back then nobody complained about either rifle being too heavy. "It was what it was". Shortly before I left the military
they told us that the new main battle rifles were going to be plastic .22s. We thought that was hilarious. Incredible. Inconceivable.
Plastic .22s?? Ahah-hahaha! What were they thinking?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the weight. But I was considering taking the beast for a deer rifle next season. However, I think the Savage 99 at 7-8 pounds is going to win that battle, lol.

What they were thinking:

I believe that 'what they were thinking' was to design a little battle rifle with a weight and recoil that their SE Asian comrades in arms would be able to handle with ease. Early experiences showed them that the M-14 was too much for the slight Asians to use effectively. The US were hoping to equip the entire Vietnamese Army (et al) with those tiny .22s.

What kind of upgrades do you suggest for the Norinco m14 to make it more reliable & accurate?

I've done all the easy upgrades except unitizing the gas system ( new stock, op rod spring and spring guide, shimmed the gas system, scoped it as I can't see the sights!) Now am working up some hand loads, I think that is what will make all the upgrades worthwhile. 2 to 3 inches out of surplus or cheap factory is likely what to expect from my experience although others seem to do a bit better. This gun is way too much fun, and the upgrading is a great way to learn the inner workings of the rifle. I read the stickies at least 2 or 3 times each as I stripped it down and put it back together...... many times. Great fun and more challenging than my bolt guns for sure
