So I'm a newb :)

But just curious if anyone can tell me why I don't see a whole tonne of surplus US Military 1911's around?

It used to be standard issue? And now isn't? Shouldn't they be everywhere?

I frequent a US gun forum and from what i Read the people in the US love there 1911 and have/shoot collect as many as they can
ladies collect shoes
US shooters collect 1911's

there is also the fact that lots of people serve in the US military and want a gun or 2 to remind them of there years of service
just like m1 Garands in the USA

the only time i have heard of a a gun smith refusing to rebuild 1911's is when it has been in a fire and temper has been removed from the steel
if it just worn out parts can be replaced

They haven't been U.S. military issue for 35 plus years. Any of 'em that were surplused, are long gone. Any that are still around in decent original condition are worth an enormous pile of money. (Last price I saw on an issue 1911 was $2500 US, Stateside. Cried for an hour. Had one I had to sell to pay a lawyer. Issue holsters are worth a lot more than you'd think too.) Lot of 'em got turned into IPSC/Pin guns/other race guns.
Governments don't sell surplus firearms much anymore either.
"there 1911" Where?
