Ruger SR9 vs. S&W M&P9?

Hey all,

So i think i've narrowed it down between these two pistols, but can't quite decide which way to go? Both are reputable brands, both are roughly the same price (the SR9 being a little cheaper). The ergonomics feel excellent on both, with the Ruger fitting my hand slightly better (although i did not change any of the grips on either pistol). The triggers seem similar to me as well. They are both very nice looking guns imo. Of course this is going to be a range toy, so safety features aren't a huge selling point to me, however, the Ruger certainly has the edge in that department. As far as finish goes, the M&P comes in black, with the SR9 being available in both black and stainless (not sure what looks nicer on the SR9 black or stainless?).

Anyways, im just a little torn between these pistols (if i had the money i would buy them both )

So what do you guys think? Especially the people that own one (or both). I'd like to hear your input and experiences with these pistols (pros/cons etc.)

Just going on appearance alone, the rail on the Ruger is less ugly!

I had my heart set on the Ruger, but when I finally had enough cash set aside to buy it there were none to be found anywhere. I wound up handling a number of different guns and settled on an M+P 40. No disappointment here, it fits well with the largest backstrap and has been nothing but reliable. No stoppages of any sort in two years (My buddy's Glock has had two in that same timeframe, with fewer rounds through, ought to bring the haters out with that ), and accurate enough for a combat type pistol. I sprung for the range kit as well, with an extra mag, the UpLula and lockable case that actually holds everything that came with the gun. You can't go wrong with the Smith, though I've been considering adding a Ruger to the collection again...

Shot the Smith m&p and didn't like it, only handled the ruger and it felt good.... My vote ruger.

I've been seeing the SR9 as low as $499 at WSS. Cabelas was, as usual, 20 or 30 more. I think a couple sponsors are right around the 500 dollar mark as well.

This one is a personal call depending on your hand size, I have shot both, prefer the Ruger, but the bottom line is which one can you get the better deal on? I liked the overall "feel" of the Ruger, the S&W felt "plastic" for lack of a better term, worse than a glock IMO. Only issue with the Ruger is loading the mags, all of mine were darn stiff. Either one can be tweaked with trigger kits (highly recommended!).

I have tried the M&P40 previously and had no problems shooting it, however just like someone else mentioned, it felt like cheap plastic. I don't mind poly guns, I just want one that has a nicer feel to it.

I've had both and liked M&P a lot better than SR9. Ended up switching from M&P to gen4 Glock 17.

I would seriously consider Grand power tho.

ive got both.
both have run flawlessly for me for a couple years now.
if i was pressed to pick one over the other it would be the S&W.
it has way more after market parts and is always available to get them.
they also feel much nicer in the hand to me with the 3 adjustable palmswells compared to the rugers 2 (reversable backstrap).
disassemble and cleaning on both is near identical.
the S&W is a lot lighter then the ruger.
mags for the S&W are easier to find.
holsters for the S&W are easier to find.
S&W comes in a range kit with everything you need in it.

meh, at the end of the day both are great guns.
the smith is just a little more greater-er-er.

Ruger SR9...if you like 1911's then this is the one to get. Wanstalls has them for $469.

I'd go m&p if your stuck on those 2, I had the ruger & it was ok...you pay for what you get with anything in life. I however ended up going with a springfield xdm & there's no going back

Just bought the stainless version for $479 from Wholesale sports. great deal and a sweet firearm... just can't justify the extra price for the M&P although it was tempting to get the range kit

Does anyone have 10,000 rounds through an SR9? -how about 20? - 30? - 40? No? Get an M&P, mine's at 45,000 rounds, still chugging along with zero gun issues.

Thanks for all the replies and inputs folks. I think im gonna go with the SR9 in the end. As far as my poll goes the results we're pretty close, and almost even at one point. out of 54 votes 30 goes to the M&P9 and 24 for the Ruger SR9.

I am sure you will be happy with the sr9. I have the sr9 and good buddy has the mnp which I shoot often. It all really boils down to what fits your hand best.

I've owned both, sold the M&P and kept the Ruger. You'll find more aftermarket parts and accessories for the M&P, but they are out there for the SR9 too. SR9 has a superior trigger, M&P has a smoother slide and superior finish. M&P will be easier to mod / stipple if you want, than the Ruger. Ruger SR9 can be a little slippery in the hand but some grip tape or ergo grip will help A LOT - and works better than frame modifications (which I've done to my Glock).

Overall I prefer the SR9, if you're thinking of IPSC the magazine safety can be a pain (You can remove it safely, easily, if you want). As for accuracy, both are good, depends on which you shoot better.
