Kalahari Lion and Oryx / Gemsbok hunt, with some nice pics of my wife's from later in the trip, finally done editing the video. Unfortunately, hours of walking after tracks in the sand wouldn't hold one's imagination, so I only put in a couple clips of tracking to keep it interesting, but if you look closely you'll see the Lion tracks. Used a Merkel 140AE .375 H&H double rifle, the first shot would have been lethal but not immediately, tough shot tucked under his chin as he faced us. The second shot hit the tree as he did his aerobatics. He ran off and squat down under a nearby bush, we walked in a line half circling him and the last shot there was to his neck right behind the head, as he stared out at us from behind the bush, and he dropped there. The ranges are far closer than the fish eye gopro makes them look, if you look closely at the first shot you can see the lion aerobatics.

Hope you enjoy.

Pretty slick, you actually remember every step you made when you watch it, a bit surreal. Bit of an odd perspective though, the gopro view, as it makes things that seemed in your face look a mile away, but happy with the different perspective and will take it in November when I go back for the next of the Five. This will make four trips in four years thanks to two in 2014 to Africa, the disease is getting bad.

Nice shooting Ardent, both GoPro and rifle. Do you think it would be feasible to mount the GoPro to the underside of the rifle barrel to capture the "shot event" or would recoil be too substantial? I have been thinking about using your technique for a Moose hunt and I think now I am inspired to try it this coming fall. Thanks for the vicarious adventure. Outstanding.

Appreciate the kind words guys, will have a fresh dangerous game video in November.

I have the roll bar mount, and it will work on a rifle barrel, I actually considered filming it just the way you mentioned. The .375 H&H unfortunately often tilts the camera on recoil, as the little hinge mechanism the gopro mounts to won't hold fast no matter how hard you tighten the screw. On lighter recoiling rifles, likely would work. Easy fix would be to epoxy the mount solid, it would't budge. My problem is I only hunt iron sights, and the bottom of the roll bar mount (on the top side of the barrel though), gets in the way of my iron sights. A scope would work fine with it.

Living the dream Ardent! Living the dream!

Congrats on the lion, man that is cool!

Thank you for sharing your hunt with us, it really is great to see guys hunting other corners of the world!

Cheers
Jay

Thanks Jay, it was a heck of a good time.

Dogleg,

Something I never thought I would hunt, White Rhino. Ran into a guy heavily into the anti-poaching while there, and he explained to me the hunting side of it and how it's helping them. Old news to you, but will outline for the general thread, I'll be hunting an over-mature bull who can't breed anymore. The hunt money does more for Rhinos than any park fees I can ever pay, and frankly, the interest in hunting one of the true megafauna and almost a creature from another era has lit a fire inside me. Because of the sensitivity around some species and the lack of understanding of the true situation, and I include myself in that, it's a subject I almost don't want to touch on or mention. They were almost at the edge of extinction beginning of the 20th century and have made an enormous comeback as I'm sure you're aware, to the point they are considered only one step from "Least Concern" on the IUCN species at risk scale. So, I did countless hours of research, found an area and folks I'm comfortable hunting in and with, and decided to book by far the most expensive hunt of my life. Close to more than all my other hunts combined, but I feel it will be worth it and is the hardest one of the Five financially to do. Decided to get on it.

As a side note, a bunch of my interest in Rhino flared from "Cave of Forgotten Dreams", a documentary on the Chauvet Cave, 32,000 year old perfectly preserved cave art in France. Prominently featured are the animals our ancestors found some of the most fascinating, Lions, Bears, Bison, Horses, and Rhinos. We've both hunted most of those, I'm missing just the Rhino, and will be a bit of fulfillment of a "Five" of my own. After this, will have to save a long time, but I suspect Leopard and Elephant as a combined hunt, do a nice long one when the boys are a bit older and mom can handle it.

Thanks guys, and indeed attention was on the cat, unfortunately the mic on the gopro is horrendous trapped inside that plastic case, and didn't capture any of the sounds. I had captions throughout describing what was what, for instance the shot at 1:00 is at a Jackal, Coyote of Africa and a shoot on sight proposition. As well, had boxes highlighting the tracks and where the Lion was, but none of it published. Too busy with the kids to try a fix, maybe when back at work.

At the risk of sounding like a ####, muzzle control, and a sweep just before the 4 min mark.
Tim

Unfortunately very much a Canadian concern, not the first time a loaded .470 Nitro was pointed at me and won't be the last. You do your best, but it's a challenging environment, I trust that PH as he works with that rifle like he trusts me, part of the deal.
