I would like to get a 308 semi auto for hunting moose, deer, etc. My question is, is the SG 542 vastly superior to the M305 or Socom? Is the SG542 an accurate rifle?

The SG542 costs more than 5 times the Chinese guns. It does have a pistol grip which I like. Thanks for your input.

SG 542 isn't vastly superior to the M305.

you can make a m305 more accurate for the same money, and m305 is more reliable....

m1a vastly superior than a SG542,

A national match coat less and more accurate out the box..

sg542 is just exotic , i prefer swiss arms sg 751 sapr but, not available ;)

Socom , is certainly greet for hunting.

Is there an easy way to add a pistol grip on a Socom?

Cheapest option is choate stock, http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...c-21-LSS-Promag-LOWER-PRICES?highlight=choate

For the use you have mentioned in your OP, you may want to buy a new Remington 750, a lightly used Rem7400, or a nice Browning BAR in .308Win.

If you wanted a full power Battle Rifle to shoot just for fun or in competition like Service Conditions at your local Provincial Rifle Asscoiation,.. and you also may give it a try for Big Game, then any of the three would do quite well . The SG542 is giving Boner's to those who never fired and can never own a G3. I'd like one too because the FN/G3 is so, so far in the past, but if it recoils like the G3, the M-14/M1A is much nicer to shoot. And the 542 will take a chunk out of your ammo budget, but again theres the exotic appeal here in Canuckistan.

The M305 is by far the best bargain, but if I had. or you have,...$ 3000 right now, it would be the 542,.... merely because it's a breath of fresh air in the Battle Rifle forums LOL

I think that the Norinco M305 is the deal of the century (20th or 21st). The SG rifles are drastically overpriced. I also agree that a Browning BAR in .308 would be the best for hunting as it would take nothing to set it up for optics.

For hunting I'd get a commercial bolt action but, hey, that's just me. Your choice and I respect that so here is my 2c : the new Norc shorties are really nice and will do the job for you - I just picked up one from Al Flahherty's and it is one of the best finished Norcs I have seen ( and I've seen a lot ). With a 18.5 barrel it is handy enough for brush and if you wish to scope it then right here in Canada we have the CASM from M14.ca which IMO is the best scope mounting solution available ( outside of the LRB M25 ). If you want to stick to the regular, 22", Norc or similar then you may find that it gets a wee bit heavy towards the end of the day but YMMV.

I have a P&D match SOCOM. They made 10 of them and I love it. I shoot irons only as scoping an m305 results in cheek weld issues and adds to the weight. I have taken a few animals with it too.

That said I will be picking up an SG542 because why not?

Can you post pic of the Match SOCOM?

I've owned both and I prefer the SG542, still wringing out some accuracy issues with it but the overall design is much more pleasing to the FAL lover in me. As far as reliability I haven't had an issue with the SG542 yet which I can't say for some M305's I've seen though most seem ok.

Look into the M14.ca Blackfeather RS it is the best stock available for the M1A in my opinion and designed for a pistol grip. M14.ca also has many very impressive products available to customize and accurize your M1A/M305.
