So I live one the west side of Toronto in Etobicoke and would like to buy a handgun but from what I understand I should join a club (or should I buy the firearm first?)

Do I just call every clubs in my area and ask if they are taking new members? should I meet up with people off of here and join a club based off that? I just want to go about this the best way, I chose to get a handgun because I figure I will use it the most living in the city right now. Since I don't hunt yet, I don't need a rifle or shotgun.

This is the hard part. there are lots of clubs around, hard to find some that will take new members.

Best bet is to try and apply in person, as they get emails every day.

You don't need to join a club to get a restricted in Ontario.

If its the same as when I did it all less then a year ago. Then I had to buy a handgun first. Then find a club to join. Take the clubs ATT course. Then they apply for the ATT and your all set.

would it be good to meet people on here and maybe they can introduce me to their club(s) to possibly join?

is it that clubs can only have so many members? why is it so hard to join one?

I almost feel like this is the same as joining a MC (or so I would assume) with first hanging around, then becoming a prospecting member and finally being accepted

There's only one range where I live, with 3 clubs shooting at it, so it was fairly easy for me to choose.

In the GTA I'm sure there are a good handful of ranges to choose from within reasonable driving distance from your house, so just go and visit them. See what each one is like, how the staff treat you, meet some club members, chat about guns etc. If you like the place, inquire about membership.

I'm sure you'll find something good.

So I went out a bought my first handgun, should have the ATT in by wed or thurs. Ended up picking the S&W M&P 9mm with the carry/range kit, seemed like the best bang for the buck and I liked the feel (and look) of it compared to the others that I got to handle. Excited to bring it home, still at a loss for finding a club, guess i have to just research it some more. A lot of broken links out there and its not as easy to find as I thought it would be.

silvercore has an online gun club i'm not sure if its good for out of province but people in bc should be fine pay the $30 buy your restricted.
I only own non restricted so take it for what you will.

Have bought 4 handguns in past year, all from different places, asked if a club member twice. Not sure what they would have said if I said no.

They would have said it probably doesn't matter because the Ontario CFO usually approves restricted transfers without a club membership. At least that's what I was told when I bought my restricted handgun without a club membership.

Here is how i went about it.
There are only 3 clubs in the ottawa area. One west, one central, one east. I live in the east end.
On the club site they were having a milsurp event one weekend. I popped in for an hour to see what its like. The event was open to non club members. Talk to a member of the executive while there and he explained the club, how to become a member, etc.
To become a member you register for their safety course online. None were offered so i added my email to their notification list.
Got an email. Signed up. Went to the safety course and am now a member.
Hope this helps.

Check out The Sportsmens Club Galt, they are accepting members and have a strong handgun section. www.galtsportsmensclub.com

You drive or condemned to the TTC? Matters a bit.
There are several ranges in Etobicoke and close to there that have a different club shooting there every week night. Cheap they ain't. One range is on the east side of Royal York, north of the Queensway. Used to be a police station before you were born. Anyway, you can pop in on the night you're free/want to shoot and talk to 'em. No idea what clubs are there now. Most don't have web sites.
There's another range at the foot of Dixe Rd in Mississauga. In behind Dan Foss. That who was there 30 years ago. There's a shooting business there now, I think.
It makes no difference if you buy before or after joining a club. However, if you plan on shooting, it's required. Ontario's CPFO won't approve transfers if you're not a club member or at least have applied to one, unless you put collecting as your reason for wanting restricted firearms. There's no law that requires this though. It's policy.
It's not the Club's ATT course. It's mandated by the CPFO to make getting into the shooting sports as difficult as possible. No law require it either.

I drive, I remember when I was in air cadets that there is a range under the firestation on burnhamthorpe near kipling. I purchased my Firearm on saturday and was called/told on monday that my att arrived so I can pick up my gun whenever I have time. They never asked if I was part of a club, on this laminated paper they told me I had to read prior to purchase it mentions that if i am not part of a club that I intent to join one shortley after purchase.

So just walk into the range and just ask about joining?

Just walk up and ask. Remember many clubs are run by volunteers and unless there is a club event you might only run into regular members but I'm sure they can point you in the right direction.

I found a club accepting members but they required a member to sponsor you or that you attend a meeting. I attended a meeting since I didnt know anyone. At that meeting I heard some of the old boys squawking about allowing too many new members in and raising a motion to consider capping membership numbers etc. so I joined before the implemented a cap! Bunch of old pissers, they would prefer to sit around ##### over shoot any day of the week!

I joined and have yet to bump into anyone on the range who wasn't personable and 100% friendly. Every guy I've run into just wants to shoot and talk about their/your guns and will offer advice if asked and more often than not will offer to let you shoot their guns. (I guess the old pissers just show up for meetings and trap).

Join a club that will let you shoot then look around for something else if it doesn't suit your needs. If you are like me and only shoot on weekends maybe look at going an hour east or west of T.O. You're bound to find a club you like and is accepting members. If you can afford it join two clubs. The club I am at and the one I am looking to join are around $200 per year. Some places charge 3 times that much.

Good luck, might take a few months but I am sure you will find something. Not having a club membership is WAY worse if you have a gun already. THAT would drive me nuts.

Cheers
