M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

sounds good Paul, I have powder and bullets coming from all over the country! BC, Saskatchewan, and Ontario so I can feed the monster and do the challenge!
Decided to go with 168 grain hornady match again and will try the155.5 grain Berger to see if I can catch up to you.

Why don't you make it interesting and start at 700 meters?

Relatively few of us have regular access to ranges offering 700+ meters. If you shoot at that range, 1.5 MOA is 1.5 MOA. I would concede that it might be difficult to get 5 groups on one sheet of paper at 700+ (we're starting to talk about big paper) but how about 2 sheets?

If we can keep the irons challenge to 100yds, I'm in. Hopefully get some holes in paper tomorrow. There's a scope mount in the mail for me, so might have to take on that challenge too :)

Tried some load developement today with the Berger 155 grain VLD bullets and Varget. out of 10, 5 shot groups I had 4 groups that measured 2.076, 1.895, 1.658, 1.450. The rest... well lets just say most guys can get as good or better with open sights!!!
This challenge is not going to be easy but gives me an excuse to try different bullet/powder combinations for sure!
Seems to be pretty consistent in that after changing the target and letting the rifle cool down the first shot will be over 1 inch out of the group for the next 4 shots so something to watch out for with the Norincos anyway, buddies Springfield M1 with the medium contour barrel doesn't seem to be affected by this. Would like to hear from others with standard contour barrel if they experience this as well?

Tried today but did not make it. Seemed to have unusual amount of vertical stringing happening but maybe it is just me...performance anxiety :p. This is the best of my attempts today. Target 1 (counting left to right, top to bottom) was all poor trigger control on my part but target 4 shows the stringing that was my primary issue today.

I've been messing with my Blackfeather barrel tension and need to re-find the setting that works best for this load. Next week....I think I can...I think I can...

I like how this is putting people's money where their mouth is and will weed out the "I can shoot 1 MOA all day" mall ninja superheroes!!

You nearly got it! You're only only a bullet hole out on a few targets. Are we aloud to use wind flags? A slight change in condition would have easily caused your greater than 1.5 moa groups.

As do I, but it doesn't stop them from setting the target up at 15 yards and saying it was at 100, lol.

Your right.
But Im not going to let that stop me trying.
I guess its wanting to prove something to myself. One way or another LOL
I will be posting all my attempts, the good and the bad, until I crack it.

Wind flags are good, especially for those shooting at longer ranges. Those of us shooting Norcs will take all the help we can get .

I once made a joke on a precision forum that if I used wind flags I would have one less excuse why I had crappy groups. Rightly so they were not amused with this cavalier attitude towards the sport.... For some reason until I read the posts in this thread I didn't think of using the flags with the M14. As Pr589 said.. " we can use all the help we can get" Surprising how the wind can change things even at 100 yrds.
I was able to beat the 1/2 inch challenge in the prescision rifle forum here after setting up the flags so either they work or I was just lucky that day?

Goddammit...I'm out. Best I can do with iron sights is around 2" - and that with factory match ammo....

Lung - If you can do 2 MOA with Commercial ammo and irons I'd say that is very good. I'd think you can shrink those groups by 25% just by finding a reload formula that your rifle likes. Some have suggested a 2 MOA iron sights challenge. Might not be a bad idea. If you folks post, I will include an iron sights sub-group.

What about a "best you can manage" iron sight challenge? Pretty sure I can't go < 2MOA with irons! :) Not gonna stop me from burning through all my ammo trying though.

Kudos OP, this is going to be a lot of fun.

If youre in Huntsville with the amount of snow you guys got this winter you shouldn't have to worry about the wind........ youre likely shooting in a tunnel no? Love that country and spend a lot of time around Kearney in the summer but Brother in law has been having a tough time finding his cottage never mind his driveway this winter!! The best I was able to do with iron sights in my norince was about 2 1/2 inches I think, will have to look back at my targets. Anyone that can do 2 inches or better with irons has my respect.

In situations similar to this, with these types of rifles, the width of the frontsight is very very important.
Example; about a decade ago I was at Genesee range with several other shooting enthusiasts (some of you are probably still around here) I brought along my M1 rifle along with about 120 rounds of accurate handloads.
With the issue front sight, from a supported prone position the 400 meter man sized target was "safe" about 60-70% of the time. This example was with several differing shooters using this rifle too. Some time later on, with purchasing the narrower match front sight (0.62 versus 0.75) these 400 meter targets were now a cinch. And the shooting challenges was now pushed to the 700 meter mark on a good day with a support on the same size of target.

my two bits only on silhouette targets.....

Just threw some different loads together and it looks like I have two loads which may do the job, and they couldn't be further apart.
Top one is 168 match thingies over 41.5 H4895..............Best I ever did with these 168s
The bottom one was just a stroke of luck. I had a box full of 150 RN to get rid of so I made up six loads and lookit what happened. I was not expecting a group like that . 150 RN over 35 gr H4895. I know theres only four holes. The fifth hole is about eight inches away, I think I may have pulled it LOL

Shot at 100yds, light snow and a soft breeze -2c.

By the way, I use Federal primers ( cant find CCI anywhere ) and have had zero issues, but I do seat them deep.
Hoping to get to the range on Monday for my first crack at this challenge.
Cheers and good luck
Derek.
