.40 S&W

The 9 mm Minor advantage, if there is one, is there may be a stage or two per match where the 10 round reload plan is superior to the 8 round reload plan.

The advantage of major is potentially on every shot. If you edge a shot out of the "A" zone into a "C" then the points are 33% better (4 vs 3) with major. I have shoot Classic at Level III matches as a minor shooter and as a major shooter. I have fully converted to shooting Classic-Major.

If you do not need to slow down to shoot perfect "A"s on every shot, then minor would not be a bad choice. If when you shoot as fast as you are comfortable, you start to shoot the occasional "C" (more than 2 or 3 per stage) then major will score a higher hit factor. I don't know about you, but I definitely fall into this latter category.

In Alberta we had more competitors shooting Classic sooner than the other provinces. Quite a few competitors started with minor as it appeared to have the advantage in theory. Most have now converted to shooting Classic Major.

I am shooting 40 major. I originally thought I would go minor with the larger bullet but found the transition to major was easier than I anticipated. I had been shooting production before. I much prefer Classic.

.40 Major.

There is a rare match where the design advantages minor (i.e. 9mm):

1) lots of steel
2) 10 round stages
3) 20 round stages

Otherwise, as ralphs says, .40 major is the way to go. Trust me... I started with a 9 and bought a .40 to be competitive. I'm happy with the move.

shot a 9mm all last year and was still competitive, but moving to .40 major this year. More than anything minor hurt me psychologically, because I knew I needed As so I was less likely to go full speed.

I shot Classic major with a 45 for a season, because that's how God intended it to be. ;)

I definitely agree with your rationale that "major" is usually better for most Classic shooters. But I have to say, I think Classic would be even more interesting if "minor" was a more viable option. As it is, stage designers often seem to plan around "not disadvantaging the 8-rd shooters". If they put together stages without this concern, then the "Classic minor" option would be much more competitive due to the capacity advantage.

Personally, even then I'd still shoot Classic major with a 45, though, if I could afford it.

if you can get the tripp system mags to work in your gun then 40 is the ticket. if the match is weighted towards the extra rounds then declare minor and put 10 rounds in the mag, if not stay in major with 8

IMO the advantage of .40 over .45 is in ammo costs. Brass is easy to find and bullets are significantly less expensive.

I think the major/minor ability of .40 is overblown, regardless the Tripp system 10 rounders would not fit in the Canadian box with my pistol. USPSA and IDPA boxes are about 2mm larger. YMMV.

That's Strange. There were guys with Tripp System Mags that passed the box test using the official IPSC Box at the nationals this year. I know one fellow well; he shoots a STI Trojan in 40.

It's doable, I know: I've done it (STI Trojan and 10 round Tripp System mags fitting into IPSC box), BUT it's a fine line to grind just the right amount off of the basepads to make them fit but still leave them sufficiently big for long term durability.

These mags are designed to work in the USPSA box, and require a small amount of grinding to make them fit into Canada's IPSC box.

It was a no go for me with a SAM Omega in the 'official' CAPE IPSC box. I would have had to grind my sights or remove metal from the magazine. If it was a matter of simply tuning the basepad I would have done it. Good to hear that it works for some of you, is the Trojan flat topped? That may make all the difference.

I still doubt the value of being able to switch between major & minor, seems more theoretical than practical to me.

IIRC they are built to the minimum spec and don't include any 'tolerance' but that argument is for another thread!

I'm personally going to go with 9mm in Classic gun.
1) I just want to buy a 9mm 1911
2) it's cheaper to shoot, if don't care to be champ, but still competitive
3) it is competitive, in these regards.
3a) extra 2 rounds will help on some stages,
3b) even if stage design is 8rnd friendly, many times the extra 2 shots come in useful not to have to mag change if extra shot is require on steel, or if hit a no shoot, and need a follow up shot (without running dry),
3c)if partially covered target and want to put 3 rnds in 1-2 targets for security (without running dry),
4) possibly if can maintain same steady shooting speed and movement that you'd with a .40, but with a 9mm, maybe you'll have more A's instead of C's or more C's instead of D's, due to the much softer recoil of the 9mm, thus being easier to shoot, less recoil, less flinching, etc.... as others said, if going to shoot same # of A's and C's etc.. then should go major. But is my above statement true, that you maybe able to shoot more accurately at decent speed (of one own level of skill) ?

Cause there is a difference in how you shoot a 130 PF gun compared to a 175 Pf gun.

Now many here have stated they tried that and found better to go to .40 major, and maybe that's better, but worth trying both and having fun finding which works is best for you. :)

If I go to match and I think match set up is not good for minor, than I'll switch to shooting standard div. with my edge, if allowed too. Or just shoot it man ! There's no free trip to Greece as a prize.
