500 yard shot with .22lr pistol

Do I think it was possible that he made this shot? yes, it is possible. Do I believe he could do it with anything approaching consistency? Nope. But, that's me. Doesn't mean I'm right.

Well, I'm sitting at your table. I don't care how good a shot you are, the variables that aren't within your grasp could throw the shot alone. Wind, inconsistent ammo velocity, a heartbeat. Without a doubt, he's practiced that shot a thousand times before.

you naysayers have obviously never been around guys that can shoot.

Most amateur golfers would never believe pro's can hit what they hit.

most amateur basketball players would call bs at the consistency with which a pro can shoot, especially in practice with no defence on him.

get the drift? good shooters are incredibly good and consistently make unbelievable shots.

In fact most BR guys are not great shooters, siting on a bench with all the props necessary to steady a rifle is not extremely gifted shooting, and those guys for the most part shoot great.

there are some off hand shooters, with hand eye coordination that darn near defies nature, and when those guys meet up with a pistol they can shoot, they are simply incredible. do a little research and you will find this to be true. They are not common, but they exist.

What the guy did in the video is obviously very doable according to the numbers. Just cause most of us can't do it, doesn't mean its not easy for those who can.

So what you're saying is that we need a professional sport shooting league on par with the MLB, NBA, NHL and PGA?

Glad to help, you're welcome  While it's a centerfire handgun, the principles are the same..

Call me impressed! That is awesome shooting. OTOH, when you listen to what the shooter says, ain't exactly a stock handgun with off-the-shelf cheap ammo. I stand by my gut feeling that it's either BS or a fluke in the original video. Saint Thomas needed a lot of convincing, and I ain't no saint!

Stock Glock 9mm, open sights. Less than 40 rounds were fired to achieve 3 hits on a figure 11 target at 300 meters on a windy day. Sure, a 9mm is going to carry better than a .22, but the shooting conditions were horrible in this video, which accounts for a lot.

Next day to the range I'm going to tape a balloon at the 300yd target board and try my Ruger MK11 and Browning Buckmark with uncut video. Bulk ammo and a prayer and we will see what the outcome is. I know there are a lot of hand gunners out there with video cams, so do yourself a challenge and post your results.

1. .22 handgun, unsupported
2. Continuous video
3. Reactive target ( balloon, clay pidgeon etc. )
4. Type of .22 ammo, who cares, just get it done
5. Distance, certified ranges will be your best choice for accurate distances. The longer the better. Backyard ranges will be the honesty of the shooter, although not very convincing.

1 point on the Man Card who achieves this challenge out to atleast 300 yards.

At 50 yards I can only group about the size of my outstretched fingers with a high end 40. At ten times that distance I wouldn't even be able to see the target.

But do I think it's impossible. Nope. A box of 500 22lr is cheap and a day is long. And with the skills some guys have I'm sure it can be done.

With the god given gift of good eyesight, superior hand to eye co-oridantion, training & a touch of talent such things are possible IMO.
But it takes oodles and oodles of practice.

Some experts say it takes approximately 10,000 hours of disciplined practice by a determined athlete to catapault themselves into the Olympic calibre zone.

maybe........

This is getting interesting now. The 500 yrd claim in the last video looks short. Final offhand shot the gun is horizontal.

Several pages back I posted that a 22 drops a bit less than 40 feet at 500 yds. This equates to about 88 MOA ... which in turn equals about 1.5 degrees. You would not be able to discern a 1.5 degree elevation of the barrel on a video thus the barrel looks to be horizontal.

An outstretched hand is about 6" across. If your rifle will only shoot 6" at 50 yds then you have a serious problem. My 22 target rifle will print 5 rds into .3" or less at 50 yds. We routinely kill gophers at 200 yds and a gopher is only 2-2.5" wide. Keep in mind the target he is using a pretty big ... at several feet across.

Probably the most important aspect of PLinkster's video is that the target is situated at the edge of a lake. This means he can very easily spot rounds that drop short so he can quickly correct elevation for range. The single most difficult aspect of really long range shooting is spotting the misses. If you don't know where the round went it is impossible to correct for it.

have you ever been around pro athletes? What makes them pros, is first a natural gift from birth, second is a whole pile of practice, and third is a break in life or a little luck. top end shooters who have that combo are a sweet treat to watch, learn from and be around. I know a few of them, great guys, and the gift of shooting that has been honed to as good as it gets.

I used to have a 100 year old bsa-martini takedown rifle with some weird ladder sight that allowed me to hit a 2l water bottle from 300 yards 10 out of 10 times...this was a long time ago when i was much younger and had much better eyesight, but it taught me that the more clearly one can see a target, the better the chances of hitting it...many years later i got attracted to sporting clays and especially fitasc with many high/far flying targets seemingly impossible to hit and the very same thing applied....my take on all of this is that if it is ballistically possible, then the rest just depends on the extent of ones own imagination/confidence in abilities...

I'm talking ten round groups with a handgun shot freestyle here. If any of my rifles did that off a bench they would be demoted to shovels or sold on the EE for 1.5x retail ;)
