ive looked into ordering one from brownells but it sounds like it can take ages for your order to be approved by the ATF or whoever.
I guess i will just have one made.

Why do you need one? A lot of barrels you want to change? It takes a lot more than just a barrel vise... action wrenches and headspace gauges, etc.
I made this on my lathe and drill press. Started with 2 inch square stock... made it 1.5 inches thick x 2 inches high. The hole is 1.5 inches to accept bushings I make to fit the job. I have straight bushings at 1", 1.1", 1.150", 1.750", 1.200", 1.250"... and a few tapered for specific barrels... When installing a new blank barrel I always turn it to match the closest bushing.

I use Gr. 8 7/8-14s, but reversed, with the nuts on the top.
Wow! That's kind of bolt that Toolman Taylor would use!
Seriously what kind of torque do you aply? I use something like 60-75flb for majority of actions and close to 100flb for mausers and such. With good amount of powdered sugar very seldom I experience barrel slippage. I am afraid that more torque might flatten the chamber....
