I need to know what barrels will and won't fit on my old rem 870 wingmaster, will a barrel that comes off a newer express fit and function as long as I use 2 3/4 shells, and
if I get a 3" barrel will it function
on my receiver?
Thanks matt

Barrel from a new Express will work. A Supermag express will not.

The issue will be the magazine cap as it will loosen under recoil. A temporary fix which worked for me was putting a layer of thread tape under the cap. Held fine for repeated shooting. As a permanent fix I replaced the cap with an express cap and its OK.

Why won't a super mag barrel fit?? I have 3 1/2" stamped barrels on 2 3/4" receivers??
Just have to fire 2 3/4" only out of it

For some reason I thought they didnt. But no matter, you have the right answer.

I was curious since my 3 1/2 barrels are high gloss wingmaster ones and they fit for sure but I have only one 3 1/2 express barrel on a turkey gun and honestly never tried it on a regular receiver. But I just googled it and you are right 31/2 express fit also
Cheers

All 870 12ga. barrels are interchangeable regardless of the chamber length with the exception of the Special Field version.

If you have a 1992 or newer Wingmaster with a "Light Contour" barrel, then there is a possibility that the forearm channel may need to be opened up due to the larger diameter of the standard contour barrels (Slug, Turkey, all versions of the Express model, 1985-on Wingmaster standard contour RemChoke)

This is obvious but needs to be stated for certain individuals: Putting a 3.5" chambered barrel on a 2 3/4" or 3" receiver will not allow you to shoot a 3.5" shotshell (well it will but you need to remove the barrel after firing to extract the fired hull) and under NO circumstance should you shoot a 3.5" shotshell thru a 2 3/4" or 3" barrel even if it is installed on a Super Magnum receiver!!!
