Remington 870 18.5" tactical barrel pitting

Being a relative gun noob, I made the mistake of forgetting to clean my shotgun prexmas and then it sat until last week, when I remembered and cleaned it ( See picture below). The barrel is an 18.5" tactical with threaded choke. There is a small amount of pitting that looks like scratches just outside the forcing cone. I have probably put three hundred rounds through this barrel of slugs, 00 buck and some other birdshot. Should I just polish and clean it like crazy, or should I be running off to a gunsmith? Will cleaning it immediately prevent this from getting worse, or happening again if I buy a new barrel? Thanks in advance.

I was wondering about plastic build up too, but hard to tell from a pic. I have had that happen before with a ithaca 300 and put the bore brush on a cordless drill on low speed and ran it through. Cleaned it right up.
 
Thanks for the feedback! It looks scratched to me, but you could be right. I will give the drill trick a whirl and let you know the results. Ill have to try to find a better way to take pictures, it was very difficult to get the angle/lighting right.
 
Dear god man its just a shotgun barrel on a "tactical" shotgun. Dont go to a gunsmith and dont buy a new one just because of this. The performance loss will probably not even be noticeable. Wrap a patch around a shotgun brush, lube it up with some oil, and run it through a few times. You'll likey be amazed how much comes out.

This should solve your problem. If the marks still remain I would suggest wrapping the brush with grade 0000 steel wool & giving it a good scrubbing.
 
Thanks for the tip! The steel wool sorted it out, and the barrel looks shiny and new! OCD averted.
