Ive been looking around at different handguns and thought I'd put it out there to the good people of CGN.

I am looking for an inexpensive plinker. Something I can take to the club anytime for fun. Even if it turns into a project gun that would be fine.
I'm thinking south of $200

So I ask this. What was your first 22 and what would you recommend I buy?

Aaaaaaaaaaand go!

Under 200 is going to be slim pickings. Nork Woodsman clone is the only new one I can think of in that range.

Up price to $400 and much more is avail. GSG, Ruger, S&W, brownings etc..

I should add that I technically already have a "plinker". Its a savage semi-auto. My rpal is coming in the mail in the next week so I'm looking for a handgun plinker.

I'd say a GSG 1911 in 22 is popular but I would spend a little more and get a Ruger or Buckmark personally

Even in used market, I wouldn't expect much at $200.

This.

Spend more! I know, easy for me to say. Unfortunately $200, especially south of???, won't buy you much of anything. Double that initial figure.

P.S. The money spent purchasing a firearm isn't the primary cost, it's the cheapest part of the equation. I spend at least $300 each time I buy .22 ammo.

I know, trust me, I know. I have my reasons. I look at Irunguns and see brands I don't recognize like "chipawa". I don't know if they are worth buying. That's why I posted this hoping to hear that there is an ok, inexpesive and very much temporary solution out there.

I did the att course at my club and did some 22 shooting. The old buckmark I used for the testing part of it let me put 4 of 10 shots in the 3/4" bullseye at ten meters. 3" grouping total. not bad for a newbie.

I think you need to double that buy in figure , if you can.
Then you can pick up some nice used pieces.
Ruger MKI , II or III

Colt Woodsman, or target , huntsman etc

You can get those for around 400 sometimes.
I wouldn't recommend the GSG, I have one, and use the ruger and colt far more, as they are far more accurate.

I just picked up a Buckmark Hunter for $425. Put a bushnell red dot on it for $100. Very happy with results and .22LR is cheap here. Much cheaper than the .45 ACP and 9mm food that my other two take ;)

Under $200..here it is...bang, bang, shoot, shoot...go get it. I RUN GUNS have them .Phoenix Arms HP22A

You really need to up the budget to around $400. Yes you can buy stuff that is cheaper such as the Norinco M93 and even that Phoenix Arms pistol. And the Norc even has a decent rep for shooting well. The Pheonix not so much. But what are you going to do when it needs some parts? Or extra mags?

Get something decent that costs more and you'll end up shooting it more often because it operates well and shoots nice tidy small groups. Because you shoot it more often it'll end up being far cheaper in terms of cost per hour of use compared to a less expensive gun that seldom ever goes to the range and which makes you look like a poor shooter.

And yes, I've been lured by the low cost guns and other than a couple of unique styles I've gotten rid of them in favour of a few GOOD guns that shoot well and reliably. It's been an interesting but expensive lesson.
