Savage 10TR le/military

Way to go Mister Donut.... You had to go and post all those pics:mad: Now that XLR is calling me :runaway: How do you sleep at night?? LOL that is one swwwwweeeeeeet looking piece of kit brother!

Haha, that's what it's all about right? Someone baited me, now it's my turn to contribute to the community :)

I didn't sleep for 5 weeks waiting for the chassis, but it was worth the wait, get one!

Anyway, I might end up posting more pictures later. I had the Bushnell 6500 that I ripped off my 700p and plopped it on the 10TR. With the 700p rocking a 3-9x40mm Leupy VX-1, I felt like it deserved more magnification, but being a bit low on $$, I figured I'd just grab something decent but inexpensive. I ended up picking up a Millett LRS and it's just MASSIVE. 6-25x56mm with a 35mm tube. It looks pretty ridonkulous on the 700 so I dropped it onto the 10TR, just for fun.

We'll see :)

The Millet came with these massive 35mm rings. On the 700, they were just way too tall, but on the Savage/XLR flat top combo, the rings were perfect. I know, the Millet is kind of a sketchy made in China scope, but I read a lot of good reviews, so I'm hoping it turns out ok.

Haha, put the PEPR is for 30mm tubes so I put it up on EE :)

You'll be fine with the Millet ..... 200 rounds later on my Savage and it's still on 100m zero.

Mind you I had this scope for about 2 years now (it was on my different rifle before) and still holding strong.

Ya, the platform needs some tall rings, but the cheek weld more than makes up for that.

I just pulled the trigger on some High, Vortex Precision Matched rings (1.26) from OpticsPlanet.com. Tried searching local (and vendors), but no luck.

Here's mine!
Sorry about the low quality phone pics, but it will have to do...
With the Farrell 20moa rail, I used medium height Leupold QWR's for the 50mm objective (they were sold out of the PWR's)

That looks awesome! I am Joansing for mine now!

I was wondering of QRW rings would work. I went with the High Vortex Precision rings because I could not find a definitive answer on ring/scope height.

What flash hider are you running?

ATRS AR-10 brake, threaded on very nice, no slop.
And I'm guessing you'd need high rings on the stock rail, as the farrel was at least double the original height.

I always assumed that a 20MOA rail would be lower/canted, requiring high rings as well.

Nope, medium height was sufficient for the 50mm scope to clear the large tube on the chassis. But, if using a long sun shade, high mounts may be required on a canted rail.

Anyone tried putting the 10TR in any other Savage SA stocks?

I know TAC21 was trying to get one that worked with the bottom bolt release, but couldnt quite get it. A few members were able to fit it in, but lost the bolt-releasing ability.

Not a big deal for me if I have to take the stock off to get the bolt out, as I'll likely be doing that anyways for a thorough cleaning. Looking at cheaper options like the Choate Sniper

I just turned mine into an $850 long range special, planning on taking her to the range Saturday...
Gun $700 off the EE
Muzzle break $32 from eBay
Scope $83 Barska from Amazon
Rings $18 UTG from Amazon
(Free shipping from Amazon and had a $25 gift card from work I got to use)
6"-9" Bipod $24.99 Caldwell from a blow out sale I found
1" nylon sling with swivels - just something I had laying around.
So all in I'm about $848 and change

Now to see how she shoots *fingers crossed*

Mine
ATRS Muzzle
Harris Bipod 6-9
Weaver tactical 6 holes rings low
Falcon 4.5-18X56 scope
Tactical butt stock sniper ammo cheek rrest swat
...still waiting a 10 rounds mag Dark eagle custom

Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44mm, leaving the 0 moa rail until I'm ready to push it past 800 meters, Bradley adjustable check rest, Timney trigger, Versa pod and CDI bottom metal with 10 round AI mag. I have all the parts now just need a rifle.

you wont get that bottom metal in the law enforcement/military deal savage, i tried to find a kit for it, as it has the bolt release located just behind the magazine, right were all the kits have the magazine release. you can however, get aftermarket mags for it that go to 9 rounds i believe

dont want to rain on your parade or anything but dude.

IMO, you got a sweet rifle and then went ultra cheap on the accessories. The scope may or may not hold zero/self destruct, but those rings? When upper end rings are $100+, like my TPS and good quality ones $50+ dont cheap out. Do you really trust those rings to be perfectly round, to actually be the correct diameter and not have burrs to mar the finish, or have the threads strip out?

buy once, cry once.

I bought once and cried once, well... I have cried a few times since the initial shock when I bought my .50BMG... this is just something to plink with between shots of the 50... I just blew crap loads of money on ammo for the 50, so right now I'm kinda broke. Going to save up for a 'real' scope and rings but I really wanted to shoot this thing and see how it does. Barska is what came on my little Mossberg MVP and on a .223 it holds zero and hasn't blown up after 100 or so shots, so for $80 this gets me on the range pulling the trigger. If it falls apart or proves unreliable then it'll force me to spend the money on the Vortex Viper HS 6-24x50 that I had in my hands but couldn't justify at the time.

Bases have nice round edges, no burrs to be found, even so, if they scratch up a cheap scope, oh well... if they scratch up the rail... well I plan on getting the 20MOA rail down the road, so again, oh well.

I can see this going exceptionally well... but I can also see it going horribly wrong. I should know on Saturday when I take it to the range. Either way it will get upgraded glass down the road when money is more plentiful and I'll throw this massive beast of a scope on my 10/22. :)

I just thought I'd try something different, I've got a really nice long range rifle that I've spent more money than I care to admit on, so thought I'd see what I can do with something that I can spend very little on and have it still function. The Baraska 4-16 on my MVP is clear enough to see .223 holes at 200m so figure .308 holes from a 6.5-20 shouldn't be a problem.

Range report to follow.
