i was perusing some old threads, and came across one by bobfortier. he made a brand new furniture set for a No4.
well i says to myself, i can do that to replace the purple liberty tree hand guard i have that i hate so much, and will be able to stain to colour match.
i have a large amount of salvaged wood from shipping pallets, so i found a mapleish maybe walnut but could be something else hard wood. i`ve never made any part for a rifle, so i didn`t want to go and spend good money on a possible piece of kindling. was i right or what. first attempt didn`t work, made an amature mistake on attempt two, and attempt three is coming along nicely. and all this in one day!
here is the third attempt.

fitting that little cap on the front..

the cap is fitted, and the groove for the band is coming along.

and close up of nose cap area

hope to finish seating the band tonight, but am getting a little tired, and also hope to have shaped before i go to work tomorrow.

front band fitted.

thanks.
got a little horny with the rasp in front of the band, took a little too much off. just. am going to stain this one for colour matching, and will install it, but will make another one, and pay a bit more attention as to the outside shape. especially if winter stays here.

it`s raining and dark out, maybe if any one wants, i can get better pics outside this weekend. i stained it with what i found in the paint cabinet, dark walnut danish oil. wood seems to be maple, judging by the blotchiness of the way the wood took the stain. better than purple. it still needs copious amounts of linseed oil, start that tomorrow. i like it, and i suppose thats all that matters.

and one to compare

maybe i`ll spring for some american walnut one day.

Shipping pallets are a surprising source of good hardwood at times, depending on origin. You make those knives as well ?

Grizz

thanks for the comments. yes, i made the knives, its something i do to relax. i`ve been using pallet wood for years, mostly make jewelery boxes and treaure chests, nail holes and all.

the purple item is what i ended up with after a week of degreasing and bleaching of the item that i ordered from Liberty tree. i scraped off about a 1/4 pound of dirt and grease. it still has a very waxy/oily feel to it. it would be ok if they also shipped fore ends in a matching colour.
it did make a great pattern for the new one.
