I did the first one right on the rifle. It required quite a few steps but is easily done. I then used the first converted mag to build a jig to do the rest (and any in the future). I now have two rifles and 4 detachable mags.

Meh... SKS with a detachable mag is a hinderance to the design IMAO. Hate to break it to you all, but! The SKS will never be an AK. It's far easier and faster to load with stripper clips.

If you want a AKish rifle. Get a Vz58. Pure and simple.

Why?!

Why do a permanent mod when a readily available, cheap solution is there?

Nice work!

While I applaud the work, I have to agree. I bought a Tapco mag for the first time last week and fitted it to my Russian SKS. I just had to lightly sand the magwell to allow an easier fit.

As for why, because some guys already have a VZ/CZ and cannot f$@kin use them. We gotta get our fix somehow! Secondly, because if you had a Wartak rail (or something like it) , you cannot use the stripper clips. I plan on going with one of these eventually, thesksmagadapter.com, as well.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. Some will find it useful and some won't, thats the way it is ;) . I went this way for a few reasons, first, the Tapco mag holding 5 rounds and looking like a huge green banana hanging under the gun doesn't appeal to me at all. Second, I don't like plastic. Third, the original mags are small and easy to pack in my kit. I have no doubt that the Tapco mags work well, they just aren't for me.

For the most part I load with stripper clips but it is nice to be able to unload without having a handful of loose cartridges every time. Now if I scope one of my SKS's I'm ready.

wikid job man, you found an awesome solution for your rifle I applaud that. Its funny, you think the purists would appreciate this mod as it retains the looks and functionality of the original design yet they still whine about it. +2 for pissing off a purist ;)

^ Lol!

It is true that stripper clips are about the fastest way to load them anyhow. But this is a great solution if you wanted to scope your rifle. I figure a scoped SKS with a detachable mag would be a great truck gun. But a 5/20 or 5/30 is just cumbersome.

I wonder where a guy could get some SKS factory mags to modify this way? So as to leave my original numbered ones alone.

Simplest solution for scoping an SKS is to offset the scope to the left.

No magazine modifications needed.
No need for a shell deflector
Stripper clip guide can be used.
Irons can still be used.
Scope can be mounted lower to achieve cheek weald.

Sorry, don't want to piss on your parade. Good idea! but there is no need to turn a Russian gun into a Western gun by relentlessly modifiying it with add-on parts.

Actually, that is probably the best idea. In your opinion, what is the best mount to use for such a setup?

Lol thats funny! That same message is preached in every sks mod thread in this forum yet everyone still does it. I wonder why huh?
