My Sensible SKS Project

Looks pretty cool to me man, have you gone to the range yet? Also, there's another way to post the pics. If you look at the right side of the photo, there's a box that says 'Links To Share This Photo', and then there's IM, Direct, HTML, and IMG. If you left click the URL-looking thing to the right of IMG, it should flash yellow with the word 'copied' in it. And then you just Control-V it, or paste it, where you want it. It will at first show up like a link in brackets, but it works.

Voila.

Why are people trying to turn the SKS into something that it is not?

The bayonet is the coolest feature of the SKS. Sure it is practically useless, but it's a damn cool piece of hardware.

You've spent a pile of time and money on a stop gap battle carbine, with poor sights (that William's can't fix), that was issued to illiterate conscripts, who could be trained to use it in as little time as possible. Now you have a bubba'd copy that has little monetary value. Bet it was fun doing it though.
How well does it shoot? Did you shoot it before you bubba'd it? Just curious.
What is the purpose of putting a bipod or a scope on a carbine? Never have understood that whole idea. Just curious about that too.

The bipod isn't welded on and the foregrip comes off also. The scope mount and scope were needed because my eye sight is starting to go the older I get and a scope solves that problem for me.

I've put a choate mount and bushnell trs-25 on my para model sks to speed up target acquisition/ accuracy; this is why most modern military units have equipped their rifles with red dot sights. I am wayyy faster and more accurate with a red dot than with the standard sks sights. I am still getting used to my para model but I may put a compact leupold 2.5x20 scope- I find that having a little bit of magnification really helps when shooting in deep bush.

Bubba is the SOB that takes a pristine win 94 and carves the stock, drills holes in the metal or modifies it to never accept a cartridge again. Not someone who takes a 100 mil surp and creates a prototype for future referrences.

they all started as cheap 100 mil surps...

Because of the weight of the ATI stock which was heavier than the original wood, I only shaved off about an ounce or two. The gun's balance moved back because the front end is lighter.

This was one of those projects that didn't require a lot of tools, mostly a dremel and a couple of good files. The barrel should be turned on a lathe to ensure true.

Looks pretty nice a pic of the whole rifle would be good. Have you weighed it to see how much of a difference it made with the mods?

Thanks for the info on posting pictures, this was the first time in years that I have been able to post pictures on this site so my first chore is to remember what I did to get this far.

Regarding the range trials, it did what I wanted to do. My eyes are not what they used to be and using open sights is not a good option so if I want iron, it has to be peep or ghost type sights. It's not practical to establish before and after accuracy checks based on off hand shooting. I did fire 3 consistent groups of 2" at 70 yards and I'm okay with that. I have minute of angle guns in my safe, this one is more fun.

Time and money are not factored into something that's fun and gives satisfaction in the end.

Accuracy comes more by accident than design more often than not. A change in accuracy (if the barrel is cut properly) would be more from a change in harmonics in the removing of the extra off balanced material hanging on the barrel. If anything I may have improved the harmonics by accident.

It is my opinion that a lot of the inaccuracy people are experiencing with the SKS comes from a combination of steel hitting steel in the breach area and from not fitting the add on scope mounts tight enough to ensure stability. They can't meet minute of angle expectations but should meet reasonable hunting ranges.

A business associate at the time took the first 3 letters of my last name and the first 3 letters of his name and added the last letter of his last name to form the word MARSTAR.
and that's todays history lesson.

Out of curiosity what company was that, I thought I knew who brought them in but now am not sure?

I do like the look of your front sights OP

Cheers
