Henry Lever mods/accessories/etc...

want to upgrade your henry? Sell it and get a browning

I went the other way, I sold my Browning. The action on my Henry is far smoother than the Browning I had. The short stroke lever was nice on the Browning, but very stiff. The finish on the Browning was better, but then it had better be at more than 3 times the price (it was a Grade 1)

You make me laugh...

I have ten lever action rimfires... four Henry's, two Brownings, two Winchesters, a Marlin and an Uberti...

For shooting pleasure, I would take a Henry over either Browning every single time... the action on the Henry is smoother, they are more accurate, and the short throw on the Browning's SUCKS! It destroys any kind of rhythm and feel... I want to "work" my lever actions, not "flick" my lever actions.

good that you laughed instead of being offended. I was just noticing that they were talking about refinishing there henrys and I have noticed the browning seems to already have a very good finish. I don`t have a lever action yet but would like to add one to my safe. Interesting you say you like the henry better. I was looking at one last week maybe I will go back and buy it.

OP, here is my Frontier Brass conversion, complete with brasslite receiver, barrel band, Skinner Black Gold peeps, Lyman AUG17 Globe front aperture sights with Lee Shaver inserts, and since these pics were taken, I added a Brass buttplate;

The standard H001 is a nice compact, light, little gun... I have one in LR, a Golden Boy in .22 Mag and Frontier's in .22 LR and 17 HMR... the Frontier is my favorite version of the Henry lever rimfires... the stock angle is better than the GB and the heft and feel is better than the H001... but it is considerably heavier than the basic H001... I happen to like the extra weight, but some don't...

I just spun the mag tube on my frontier in .22wmr last night. I think this is going to make it far easier to load on the fly in the gopher patch this year.

That being a given, where are the pix?

The Henry strip and oil has to wait for a while. But here's two fore stocks I've done using the methods mentioned already.

The top is a short barrel Thompson Center that came with a rifle forestock. I made the one shown from some mahogany I had (the real stuff, not the philippines luan that is sold in lumber yards as mahogany) then oil finished it with the PTO I mentioned.

The lower forestock is on a Greener Martini 12Ga shotgun. It originally came with a lumpy looking "log" of walnut that was poorly shaped and had crude finger grooves cut into the wood. I shaped it down as shown and oil finished it again with PTO from Lee Valley.

When I get a chance to re-work the H001 I'll post up a new thread on the project.

Is there anywhere to buy the brasslite covers and bands?

There was an offer made to Rimfire Central Henry forum members by Andy Wickstrom of Henry Wisconsin for $50 they would provide a replacement cover and barrel band in brasslite... I bought three sets for my H001Y and two Frontiers... I wish that I had bought ten... As usual, people got stupid and screwed the kind offer up... last time I spoke with Andy he told me that he won't be doing it again.

These are just icons in my mind of beautiful rifles.. now I'm getting a twinge to add one to my small arsenal.
