I very much want to learn more about the mechanism of my pistol but don't yet have the confidence to completely disassemble it without someone present who's familiar with the process. Any handgun clinics or CGN members with time to share in the lower mainland?

That's a great resource.. is there a video similar to this available?
For anyone doing this there are only two points to really watch. One is the double sided safety where there are two really tiny parts on the left side that can be easily lost and want to leap away if not carefully controlled. These are the safety's retention catch and the spring that pushes the catch into place and holds it there. Both aren't much bigger than a dot. The second is the need for modified pin punches for the trigger's main pin. I did up a long pointed punch for removing it and a broadly rounded punch for re-setting the swaged end after re-installation. It also needs a slightly rounded punch or heavy nail as an anvil for the other side while this is being done.
Really though this isn't the sort of stuff you need to do unless you're pulling the gun apart to allow for installing new parts or modifying existing parts. Such as during a trigger job for example.
For cleaning a flushing solvent will remove all the fouling that needs to be removed without tearing down the gun. Brake cleaner works well but it also removes ALL the oils. So as a result I'm a fan of the Ed's Red mix (google for the recipe) since it flushes the fouling away well and when it dries there's a light coating of protective and lubricating oil left. The action points can get oiled with a little more oil after easily enough.

Over the years I've picked up lots of hints and help from forums such as this one as well. So if I can give a little back I feel it's the least I can do.
That's great advise on cleaning BCRider. I just very much like the idea of knowing my gun better. I recently had a malfunction with my Tokarev and discovered that I couldn't even correctly identify most of the parts let alone know what they do.
