lighter deer/goat caliber 243 vs 25-06?

I'm on the Island and have used a my 788 carbine (18") 243 with much success. 100g standard hunting rounds is more than enough for the Local deer. The 243 is going to have less recoil IMO than the 25-06.

I know it's not on your list, but the 30-30 is a great island cartridge and is handy in a levergun for the brush. Also a bit nicer if you find yourself in a tight black bear situation.

Bring the 30-06 for the LEH Elk draw (if your one of the lucky ones)

Cheers!

i have a 30-30 (1942 year old model 94 from my grandpa) but i wanted something synthetic and a scope for distance i love the 30-30 but beyond 50-75 yards i dont am not a good shot with iron sites

Partial to the 7mm-08 myself... as long as you can get the ammo over there.
A 30-30 Marlin lever is quite nice as well, and scope sights work well on that platform. Ammo is everywhere!
Of course... everyone should have a Model 94 Winchester in the safe!

I love the 25-06 but in your situation a 6.5x55 or 7x57 would be better in a nice short handy rifle.

CGN ... where the answer to "Chicken or Fish?" is "Beef".

Andy, I don't think that bolded part says what you seem to think he meant. It was a comment on how much of each cartridge's potential was realised at 20-22 inch barrel length, not a comparison of the absolute performance of the two. The .25-06 may "out shoot" the .243 at that barrel length, but does the .25-06 when given more barrel length out shoot the .243 by even more?

Yes it does, the 25-06 gains perhaps all of 5-10 fps per inch of barrel over the 243, hardly a reason to dismiss the 25-06. The two in fact have quite similar "expansion ratios" - the 25-06 has more case capacity, but also has a larger bore, and both behave similar to several popular "magnum" cartridges. Fact is, if for some reason you want a 20" barrel and "need" more bullet energy, you can either increase pressure or increase case capacity. Using the 6mm bore (Apples for Apples), a 6mm-284 with a 20" barrel will behave like a 25-06 for a given bullet weight, and produce an MV considerably higher than the 243, but at a cost of higher recoil and more powder consumed.

Here's a good article: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2014/03/overbore-cartridges-a-working-definition/

I don't know what "true potential" means, but every cartridge gains MV with an increase in barrel length (to a point), and the greater the powder capacity, the greater the increase per inch of barrel. What is does not mean (and this is where the common myth lies) is that a 6mm RUM becomes a 243 with a short barrel, i.e. that it "needs" a long barrel. I have a 6.5-300 Win Mag with a 24" barrel and it shoots the pants off my 6.5X55 with a 24" barrel - it still would with 18" barrels.

Of your 2 choices ( 243 0r 25-05) and you already having a 30-06 - the choice should be the 243 WIN in a short action lw rifle such as a Tikka T3 SS 243 Win - it would make a wonderfull rifle for you - Outfit it with a 2.5-8 or 3-9 Leupold scope in lw Talley rings and there you have it ! :D JMO RJ

Personally don't get how hung up some shootin' folks get on eekking out a few extra fps in a hunting rifle by going to a longer barrel... I personally prefer shorter (handier) barrels on hunting rifles... particularly in the OP's situation in heavy timber... giving up a little velocity (not accuracy) is a good trade off for improved handling and "wieldiness"... particularly if you reload, where you can often compensate for the velocity loss (should you choose too... which I rarely do, as 50-150 fps has little impact on terminal performance). I have a plethora of short barreled hunting rifles... and enjoy their efficiency very much.

EDIT; Ooops, wrong thread... I thought I was in the .243 for Vancouver island thread... soooo; shoot a 48" barrel... that otta do it.

RJ........bite your tongue !!!! You'd recommend a T3 before a nice Rem Mod 7 in 243, I can't think of a nicer Island deer rifle than a Mod 7 in a 243, 260, 7-08.............Keep this up and we're gonna demand a change of moniker............LOL

243 with 100 gn works excellent have shot lots of deer with mine ,no recoil the only limitation is that brush tends to deflect hi velocity light bullets open country fine if I am hunting in the thicker areas 308 seems to work a bit better. It is real hard to find decent bullets in factory ammo if you are planning on using regular ammo Winchester ect you will be disappointed they create sever damage to everything you shoot and waste meat as regular bullets seem to explode on impact. I reload and use premium bullets for hunting shot a moose at about 100 yards with a regular Winchester 100gn behind the shoulder it wasted far more meat than if shot the same way with a 300 mag,it toally destroyed a front quarter as there was shrapnel everywhere.

yep, and even better yet, a Browning Micro Medallion or Micro Hunter in any of those cartridges. And they have got the Hunter's delight feature, too boot!;)

I would rather compare 243win to the 7mm-08 instead of the 25-06. I like the .243win we have. very accurate and next to no recoil. I have 87g V-max shooting well under 1" @ 200yds and 100g partitions at .825" @ 100yds. Have not put the partitions into big game yet. I have no worries about Deer and Black bear out to 300yds with a proper shot.

The "DOG" deer you have on the island I would not hesitate to take a 223rem out loaded with 70g TSX.
If you are like me and pack for the biggest thing in the forest ( whether or not your hunting it)
I would be after a 7mm-08 for island hunting
Loaded with 140-150g bullets and your laughing all the way to 300-400yrds for deer and black bear
If you manage to pull a elk tag you would be all set

Short action like your after.
Low recoil
Ammo is available on every shelf I look at

IMO

The .243 vs .25/06 is more interesting than .243 vs 7mm-08... otherwise you are just comparing the same case with larger bullets, and the results are a conclusion of physics... the smaller lighter bullets will be faster, the larger caliber heavier bullets will eek out more energy with better efficiency... discussion done. .243 vs .260 vs 7mm-08 vs .308 vs .338F vs .358W Same conversation as 6mm vs .25/06 vs .280 vs .30/06 vs .338/06 vs .35W... etc... etc...

I currently have a couple of Remingtons ... a 700 Mountain in 257 Roberts and a 700 CDL in 25-06. Both, IMHO, have a small advantage over the 243 in that they can digest 115 & 120 bullets.

Having been out in the boonies of Van Isle, I think I might look to a Model 7 in either 260 or 7-08, and although I much prefer wood, I think I'd go the synthetic route.
