When do bears come out

I have been hunting bears for a few years. I've taken a few.
I have moved and now live in a area that gets real winters.
Where I use to live they was no question the bears were out before April 1st.
Now I still have 1 1/2ft of snow at the house. So in my mind the bears are in their dens still.
Had a few loggers in at work say they have seen a few out and about.

So my question is how do you judge weather they are out yet.

I know it's baced on the weather. But it's still -10 at night and only +5 during the day. Getting periods of snow. No vegetation starting at all. Just goes against everything I thought
 
I have seen bear tracks in the snow before many times.
Those big fellas with a good fat layer think nothing of coming out on a warm day and scouting for winter kill to get their systems going, then going back to bed if the weather turns.
 
wife and daughter saw one this morning they were walking along rural road 200-300yards outside city limits this is on Vancouver island
 
My grandfather spent his life on the trapline. He said bears come out once their dens get wet. Thus some bears are out earlier than others. Thats the only factor ive ever heard that makes sense but it doesnt really help you out.

That helps a lot.
We have a heavy clay bace. A lot of water stays on the surface. Since we got more snow then normal this year. That would explain the wet dens with plenty of snow still on the ground

so if they den up in a place that stays dry do they stay in there year round..? f:P:
 
During Bear Aware season,
Apr. 1 - Nov. 30, do not set
containers out before 4am.

This is what is on our local website for garbage pickup.
Kamloops area.
The way I understand it, don't put out the garbage bins before
4am or the Yogi's will be into them.

Bears are 100% already out here in warm Squamish. Saw one on the river 3 days ago and our neighbours garbage was mulched :p I'd bet the island bears are out already too.
 
The bears come out once there is food available, and/or if their dens get too flooded. In my area (N/C Alberta) we're getting a lot of melt in the past few days. I will expect to see some green grass, green shoots, and some bears on south facing slopes or open, sunny cuts in the next two weeks. Coincidentally I have a bear hunt planned for 2 weeks from now :)
