Which quick detach mounts?

I just purchased an FN Browning Safari in the old moose crushing 30-06. I want to put quick detach mounts on the rifle as the bush get pretty thick where I hunt. I was wondering which brand to go with. My scope is a Balvar 1.5-6x 32mm. I think i would need a front base or front ring, that will position the front, ring rear of the base screws to get proper eye relief of the scope. If that doesn't make sense a good example of what I am talking about would be a reversible front base from Leupold or their extended front ring. I see EAW has many options that look great. I am having a hard time acquiring the proper serial number of the mounts I need. Who can get them over here?
Thanks,
Steve

I've had good luck with Talley QD rings, but they don't make an extension ring or a reversible base, so you would be looking at getting a custom base made by a gun smith. That's the route I went with my Brno 602, and yes, I think its worth the expense and trouble. Another option you might consider is a one piece Pic rail, which provides the most latitude of any mounting system, and use a Larue style ring which is both QD and extremely repeatable.

Thanks Boomer.

I see lots of people on here using EAW mounts…Can anyone shed some light as to where I can get some? I see on the EAW site the charts but nothing for an FN browning. Which specific Mauser action does my gun have?

Personally I'm not a fan of detachable or extended mounts. Extended mounts are the weakest metal on your rifle and are easily damaged or bent, and the removable mounts don't seem to hold zero after time. Detachables might be ok on a low power rifle with short range like 7.62x39 or 30-30 but I wouldn't use it on a rifle where I need a few hundred yards for range. Its better to use variable scope that widens out when in thick bush.

I have been very happy with my set of Burris quick detach. I use them on my heavy recoil slug gun and they are rock solid. As for extension rings, you may not need them if you use a Leupold or Redfield with good eye relief.

I am in your area and do have an extra set of the Burris if you would like to try them.

I have an old set of Weaver rings that were spring loaded I never did trust them. I have a set of QD mounts from TC that would work well if you could find the right way to mount then on another rifle.

Assuming you intend to be able to remove the scope to use the factory browning open sights, the only base that will efficiently allow view of the sights are the good old weaver alloy bases with the trough milled out the middle.

They work quite well as QD mounts and bases if everything is installed correctly

I bought a set of Warne QD rings, there is a small piece on the underside of the ring that is meant to ride in the base slot, every time I take the scope off if I do not tighten up the ring immediately the piece falls out, I would not recommend these rings.

In the past I had EAW and Blaser mounts on firearms that were made of fantastic quality. After removing the system from the receiver and replacing it, their POI were dead on. I have no experience with any other QD mounts such as, Leupold and Talley.

Yes, I have won a few coffee bets proving they return to zero as well as any costing for or five time the price. :)

I've had similar success in 'wagers' using Weaver Pivot mounts. When I inherited my Dads model 4000 LW Husqvarna, the Weaver Pivots is what he had decided to use. Long story short, after giving them a good try-out, with the results I experienced, I how have them on a number of Husqvarnas, Winchester model 70s, a couple of big bore Marlins and now also on a recently acquired Zastava Mannilcher.

Wow! I didn't know those EAW mounts were that much.

Ted,
Are you talking about the standard weaver bases and rings? If so, I have them here for that gun. After I sight the rifle in, I'll take the scope off and remount and see where poi is. I'll report back to this thread with results.

Thanks for the info guys.

Hi Steve,

Yes, the standard Weaver bases and rings. You will be pleasantly surprised when you try shooting a group while removing and replacing the scope between shots.

For several years I mounted the rings with the front ring hard against the slot of the front base, and the rear hard to the rear of the rear base slot. My purpose in doing so was to make sure the scope could only go onto the bases the same way every time. It worked, but one day it dawned on me that one ring was taking all the recoil force. Changed, then, to installing both rings hard against the front of both bases.

Still works just fine. Just need to be sure to replace the scope with the rings against the front of the slot in the bases each time.

Looking forward to your report,
Ted

I will report back on the subject but it may take a while, its pretty wet around here, especially to get to the two ranges I have available.

Thanks again Ted.

I have had that same scope for several years now. It has been very good scope over the years. I use it as a spare and for range blasting new-to-me rifles. It has always been in Weaver mounts.

Those type bases/mounts are dependable, flexible, lightweight and priced well. They will serve you without problems.
