I was asked the other day about how long Black Badge Certification is good for if you do not actively take part in the sport or nenew your membership ( pay yearly dues and compete ) . Is the training good for ever , or is there a point where you have to take the Black Badge course over again if you have not been involved in the sport for a few years and wish to compete again......? Thanks and enjoy the IPSC season.....

im sure someone who is more active then I will jump in with details, but I think after 2yrs of not shooting a Level 2 match you have to redo the BB course

From the IPSC Ontario Website:

RE-CERTIFICATION POLICY:
•One year lapsed
Simple renewal, unless provisional card holder, then a safety check *
•Two years lapsed
Renewal after safety check/recert exercises with Master BB Instructor or BB Instructor if instructor unavailable *
If provisional card holder, redo of BB course and new Blue Card issued, no charge except for instructor fee.
•Three or more years lapsed
Renewal, recert exercises and open book exam (as the rulebook can be changed every three years) to acquaint the returning member with the rule changes *

Any questions are best directed to the Black Badge Coordinator for the province where you live

As long as you keep paying your membership you are black badge certified, you don't have to shoot a single match or even touch your gun for 10 years. as long as you keep sending in your cheque you will be considered safer than some who shoots a match every weekend but doesn't pay their membership for 4 years. Kind of fishy when you look at it that way

You keep using logic like that and people will start to dislike you.

Does the Can. IPSC group still allow US competitors to shoot here without any BB or pre-check?

Maybe in Ontario, but not in BC. In BC, you need to complete a level II match or show proof of completing an out of Province Level II match every year to maintain your Black Badge. Requirements to recertify vary depending on how long it has been since your last "sanctioned" match.

No. Proof of competency is required, and always was. (letter from RD, multiple published major match results, etc.)

So any international shooter that doesn't have a Canadian BB must show proof of competency? Isn't a USPSA member, a member of IPSC?

pay to take a course, pay yearly dues and then match fees on top? How much does this all add up to?

If you're not going to attend matches, you can save yourself the yearly dues and the course fees as well. Your cost should be $0.

thanks for the misinformation.
If a guy is looking to get into the sport, what are they looking at as far as fees etc goes and you say zero?

When I had a friend visit Ontario prior to emigrating, he shot a match in Guelph. It just took a simple e-mailed letter from his RD.

In Ontario, Level 1 and 2's range on average from $10 to $50 per match. The bulk of them being $20. L3 is more expensive.

BB course was I think around $200.

But what I think what beagle was referring to was that if you're going to start deciding whether the $300ish in startup fees is the deciding factor, you might as well not start. Because the costs for ISPC more in the gear, guns and ammo. Match fees, imo, are negligent compared to the rest. However, what I do love about IPSC is that you can compete exactly how you like. If you want to use a $20 belt, you can.

I tracked my expenses for 2011 and 2012 (I dropped the ball for 2013) and it averaged in excess of $1000/month. That included things like gas, hotels, meals, match fees and if I flew to a match it included airfare and car rentals. It didn't include ammo. Now, I may not be typical, but OTOH I'm sure there are some individuals that spend more than me.

In Quebec you have to successfully compete in 2 Level II matches per year (anywhere in the world) to retain your BB. DQs don't count towards this.

Otherwise, you have to take the course all over again.

Seems ridiculous to me, but that's the info I was given.

Well then. I guess my CRO status from 1990s is no good. That's fine. No longer any interest in IPSC. Cowboy, 3 Gun or IDPA looks like more fun with less BS.

Another interesting point is ~ BB is Truly “Canadian” - is not a World requirement.
