AR or T97

T97 is a $1000 made in China rifle that should be retailing for $500 based on the poor ergonomics, poor choice for adding optics, and overall quality...by being made in China.
Personally I would never spend that kind of money on one of these.

The T97 is a solid rifle. Manufacturing quality is acceptable, and although the design is a little outdated, you're not going to get anything comparable for $1000.

Bullpup....that's what you mean. You can't get a comparable bullpup for $1000.....right?

So we can all safely assume that you have never even come close to seeing one in person.

It all depends on what you want. the next closest 'black' rifle that is non restricted that shoots a rifle caliber is what? XCR? so you're talking $2500 to $3500 so $1k is dirt cheap. but the NR class adds 'value' because you're not stuck sitting at a range.

I have an AR, I'm seriously considering a T97 for fun.

I shoot at my house, so having a restricted gun is a big negative for me. If I was more inclined to go into town to shoot at the range than I probably would of bought an AR as I feel they're a better gun. That said, I love my t97 and would highly recommend one. The cost and handiness of it are a huge plus. I pack mine pretty much everywhere, as far as the reliability issues, anyone with a slight knowledge of guns and tools can correct them in a few hours.

So you got a Norinco CQ instead???
:p
Sorry Hitzy, couldn't resist that one...

Varminting is out for the restricted ARs.
:(

Range work verses plinking.
The Type 97 is actually fairly accurate for iron sights. Maybe not enough to varmint yet.
I'ld like to see a couple more reports about the FTU, flat top upper, conversions and accuracy though before I reach for the band saw.

Can't go bad with either.
If you decide on an AR, it will be even harder because, now you have to decide on barrel length and style.

Accuracy = same
Reliability = Mini 14
Durability = Mini 14
Optics Mounting = Mini 14
Cheap Mags = T97

Optics mounting = same (both require bolt on rings/picatinny rail)
Reliability = same (you have to use good mags, never seen an issue with the T97 and Pmags, it tends to be temperamental with LAR mags... note that the Mini can also be unreliable when used with junk aftermarket mags)
Durability = unknown (T97 hasn't been around for long enough to determine this)
Accuracy = dependent on version of Mini, most are less accurate, the 58x series is about equal (this is mostly due to the trigger), the target is more
Handling = T97
Trigger = Mini
Actually being a black rifle = T97

Don't get me wrong, I like the Mini for what it is... But it's not a black rifle any more than the SKS is. Sure, you can dress one up to look like one, but it'll still be a varmint/ranch rifle in a fancy stock.

Mini has a cheek weld with optics which was more what I was getting at there ...only rings are needed, receiver is dovetailed for Ruger rings. T97 is pretty useless for optics mounting unless you get the .ca rail and hack it up. Mini was used by LE for a lot of years, so I would say it fits the black rifle bill. It's an M14/M1 carbine hybrid more or less.
I wanted to like the T97...but it's just not worth $1000 to me....too much wrong with it out of the box once the bullpup novelty wears off.

I did buy a CQA...based on all the fantastic reviews on here lol
I was disappointed with the quality as soon as I opened the box. Even for $529 it ain't worth it to me....and it's already found a new home didn't even put a round through it :)
I learnt the hard way that there are tons of newbs on here that know very little about guns or quality, and reviews on here are worth about the same as the cost to join CGN.... $0 lol
You can get a DPMS/S&W/PSA USA made AR15 from IRUNGUNS for $700-$750 with their rotating sales, 10 times the rifle of a CQA.

LE also used Win M70's, but that doesn't make it a black rifle. Nothing wrong with the T97.ca rail, and the iron sights are half decent. I'm not saying it's the perfect rifle, but for $1000, a NR .223 bullpup that takes AR mags is pretty good.

It sounds like you just don't like bullpups, or are trying not to like the T97.
