looking for a 9+1 pump with a decent brake for 3 gun, 590A1 seems to fit but I would like the brake off the road-blocker.Will I have to change barrels?

Personally, I would get the Vang Comp System done to a 590A1 20". Shot my friends now thinking about doing the same to mine!
Casey @ TacOrd is the man.

I think that would be a badass setup... the Roadblocker muzzle brake looks like it works wonders. I see that many guys buy the Roadblocker and put an actual buttstock on it.

Can shoot with one hand with very little recoil, like these rednecks:

This guy thinks the muzzle brake does make a big difference:

IMO…the Roadblocker muzzle brake works wonders because it has some weight behind it. This would probably be the reason why many owners are installing a buttstock to support the heavy front end. Again, just my opinion.

I can see those large brakes certainly reducing recoil. But the heavy barrel on the 590A1 already aids in that dept. (compared to other shotguns) The 20" A1 has a 8+1 capacity, as well.

Or not installing a buttstock. I think this muzzle brake works. Whether that's bird shot she's shooting or not, it looks more manageable than my Mossy 500 with the pistol grip. The guy in the second video I posted up there said that it greatly reduced felt recoil. The brake's mass on the end of the barrel may help as well, indeed.

st1264…does your 500 have a pistol-grip/shoulder stock combo or a PGO?
If its a PGO only then do yourself a favour and buy a ShockWave Raptor grip. You can order directly from ShockWave and IIRC there is a Canadian seller now. For ~$40 (shipped) it has made my PGO JIC very manageable (I shoot 00Buck…indoor range requirement)

I have the Persuader that comes with a pistol grip only option and a full stock. I used the pistol grip a couple times and now it's sitting in my closet somewhere. I put some wood on my Mossy but have yet to shoot with it on. I have some spare furniture if I buy another 500/590.

Those brakes on the Mossbergs are just a marketing gimmick (Roadblocker and Rolling Thunder). They don't do anything useful, and in fact make aiming even harder if you install a stock as with the pistol grips you can't aim or hit anything worth a sh1t in the first place. I've shot them both...

The barrels are the same on both models and they are threaded, so you can unscrew and remove your new paperweight, and you've got a cool looking threaded barrel at least.

That said, the brakes are only available on the 500's with threaded barrels... not the 590's as there are no threaded barrels available. I highly recommend you get the 590 (I've got both 500 and 590 , and the latter is the superior model hands down)

Well, I bought one of these. On sale at Cabela's for $399. Mossberg USA says retail is $562, so I think it's a great deal!

You did fine at that price. I was just at WSS and they had it on the shelf for $439.
Don't let the wet blanket post above me sway you. You can add and remove things from this shotgun, that's how they are designed. There's no aiming when hip shooting, and you can install a choke if you ever fit it with a stock. Enjoy your purchase.

OP, if the brake is wanted for reduced recoil on the 590A1, then don't worry, the added weight of the heavy barrel does a good job of that already compared to other shotguns.

Yes, I know the disadvantages of shooting 'from the hip'. It's just a cool looking shotgun, which is not that practical. Many people do not like muzzle brakes, but the videos I posted on the first page appears to prove that they work. The one guy in the video changes barrels on his shotgun and the one with the muzzle brake reduced recoil in his opinion. Many people rave about muzzle brakes and ported barrels, others don't like them. To each their own.

My intention was to see how it was with the pistol grip and if I didn't like it, install my extra buttstock on it. The brake and heat shield make this shotgun look pretty damned cool, I'll see how cool it is when I get it.

I wasn't trying to be a 'wet blanket' .. just wanted to add from personal expiriance. I actually got a deal on the 'rolling thunder' version myself a while back, and I tossed the muzzle brake (used it as a bmx axle peg) and had it as a pistol grip for over a year. Its got a stock on it now with breech barrel tip and so much better to shoot, and is now my dirt-bike gun as I've got the 590 for everything else.

Dont get me wrong, I'm also very fond of impractical shotguns, check out my 'sawed off double barrel' thread. it doesn't get more impractical than that.

if you want it by all means get it, and try it with/without the brake and report back to us what you think...
