Rabbits are still partly grey in NE Alberta!

Managed to get one of two yesterday in about an hour and a half with the old Iver 16 sxs. Bbq'ed him up covered in Bullseye and warmed up a can of beans to have with him. Tasty, I'll be out in a day or two for sure looking for a couple more. ]

I suspect I did see two very fleeting glimpses of hares giving me a wide berth. This I cannot confirm 100%.

I am very familiar with this feeling. Not only do I hallucinate hares while out there, I also dream about hunting them nearly every night. I can never be really sure if I see one or not until I pull the trigger and see it do the flippity-flop. :D

I'm exaggerating a bit, of course. But just a bit.

Nice job Ironsighter! I went out for a bit on Saturday but the snow conditions made snowshoeing anywhere off of a trail almost futile. The snow was wet and yet soft and I was sinking about 18-24" even with snowshoes. Got some exercise but didn't see any hares.

Any of you guys ever hunt grey squirrels? That is something I really want to try. I just have to find some areas with huntable numbers. I see them sporadically, but see a lot more red squirrels (too small to be worth shooting).

Thanks!

The snow conditions were about the same were I was. Totally exhausting hiking around in that crap, but my drive to shoot hares makes me push through it. I'm a bit of a nutcase, I guess.

There are no grey/black squirrels in my area at all. Lots of reds, but they are off limits here.

Thank you, sir. I have always limited myself to head/neck shots only on hare, but my recent switch from .22LR to .22WMR has made that a necessity, rather than a choice. ;)

Best of luck to you this season. My goal between now and May is 189 hares.

Ah yes, the 22 magnum round... One of the most under a appreciated classics. :)

still white in NS, and with 4 ft of snow in the woods they'll be like that for a while.

Uhm, I do believe the game biologists are of the train of thought, that hours of daylight or lack of daylight have more to do with color change then snow on the ground.

I've personally experienced "neon bunny" hunting in both Alberta & Saskatchewan, whereupon the bunnies were turned white & there was no snow present.
And I'm 110% sure there are several rabbit hunters on this forum that have seen this lucky hunting opportunity as well.

Yep. Have seen the opposite, too. Not uncommon in spring and fall.

What does one fromOntario needs to hunt rabbits and pheasants in AB or SK?
Saskatchewan is pretty strict about it's pheasant hunting. IIRC, one has to be a resident there to hunt them, period. Rabbits are not on any licence in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Nor are their any bag limits or closed seasons. See them & shoot them where it's legal to discharge a long gun. I am pretty certain here in Alberta, you can buy an upland bird licence as a non-resident and hunt pheasant on unoccupied crown land during an open season for them. But most bird hunters have a good hunting dog for this. And I'm 99.9999% sure you do not need a licenced guide in Alberta for small game as a non-resident.

They're starting to change back now...

^Geeh, not really any lodges that cater to small game in this part of Alberta friend. IIRC, there is an upland bird hunting guide in Emporer (spelling?) Alberta. Probably will not be cheap. Good time to book for next fall season though. Maybe.

Just the day before yesterday I took 4 in one and a half hours. A bit of a conflict with photobucket as I'm visiting NS right now & this is not my computer. Maybe I'll figure it out later on.

Cheers.....

We used to be infested with grey squirels out at my parents place. They are quite tasty. Needless to say their population is much smaller in that area now.

Do they taste like peanut butter?

Been a long time since I have consumed one.
Dad use to bring them home and ma would stew them up.
But I have misplaced me taste buds on these.
