ammo inventory... do you know what you're low on?

does anyone else go to the store, see a caliber and think they're low on it, buy some, get home and realize you've got lots?

There was someone a while ago that posted an ammo inventory spreadsheet, well I took that and ran. It was a slow day so added a few more pages to make it easier to count inventory and another to make little printed sheets so I can record what I take to the range with me so I can subtract it from the on hand list.

Just wondering what, if anything anyone else is using, always looking at making it easier. Then I know what I need to buy on the next trip, or if I have an overage and looking for a fun range day, take something I have lots of ammo for.

Also can one have "too much ammo"?

I like the idea of organizing the information though. I have a large water proof box I'll jam a clipboard and a ledger to record ammo-in and ammo-out.

I'd be more interested in recording rifle usage (i.e., which rifle used how much of which ammo) maybe include a line or two for cleaning so as to try to fine tune how often a rifle needs to be cleaned based on what it's firing.

Geez... is there an app for that?
 
but knowing what you have so you don't try to go out on a Sunday when all the gun stores are closed and realize that you don't have any ammo left worth shooting that REALLY takes the fun out of shooting.

Yeah, that's a good idea too.

I have a seperate speadsheet I keep for 'cost of shooting' so when friends come out it has replacement cost so that way they can track what they use and then just replace it afterwards. much cheaper than taking them to a range that rents and charges 3x the actual cost of ammo

I've been told recently that I'm an ammo wh0*e

Maybe have a 'rounds shot' list? with a date cleaned as well (the cleaned one doesn't apply to me, they get cleaned after every outting)

That's the problem though, the shelving is good for open cases, but when you buy by the case and store them somewhere else sometimes a case will get buried under something else, or you think it's a case of .22LR when it's a case of 9mm (since they're so close in size) then all of a sudden you have a large surplus. Surpluses are good.

i see your point, i take the ammo out the case so i can see the box or reloaded ammo goes in MTM boxes, high volume stuff like varmint rounds go in ammo cans or color coded MTM boxes so a glance lets me know where i'm deficient...

Ahhhh yes... the MTM boxes. I have a good stack of them but only a few are full so this also helps track what are there.

Do you have seperate storage for empties?

emptys go back in the MTMs they came from and are stored on non locking shelves in boxes arranged by caliber then i know how many bullets or primers i will need (i have been known to go on bullet buying rampages when i find one i like)
 
I don't keep very good track and I always end up buying more when I'm in the city......because I forgot how much I do or do not have.

I'm short on 10 gauge reloading supplies though, waiting for an order to come in. I have an over-abundance of 12 gauge stuff and I don't even own a 12 gauge shotgun.
 
I can't be bothered. As another put it, don't need more paperwork. I count by full crates only. The rest is all just loose rounds.
 
I only shoot three calibers/gauges (.22, 7.62, 12 ga.) and don't reload so I don't have much trouble keeping inventory. Good thing is my ammo money gets concentrated on those three so I accumulate at a good rate.

Even then, I do have a list of how many rounds I have of everything. It's just easier to count/track compared to what the OP has to go through :)
 
25,000 3.5" 00 Buck=100 flats of 250? that's a lot of Buck. Like 1.5 tons of buckshot. Do you shoot a lot of 00 loads or have it as an investment of sorts?
 
I have a list made up that lives on my ipad and iphone. It's there more for my inventory tracking than to ref if I need something more.

Which reminds me. I'm low on 12ga trap. I think it's about to go on sale.

I just put 5's in so you could see how it calculates based on quantity and shows the graph and pie chart... I WISH I had that much ammo
