Specs:

12ga.
Heavy walled, 20" parkerized barrel.
8+1 capacity.
Matte black aluminum receiver.
Synthetic speedfeed stock and corncob forend.
Ghost ring rear sight, orange flared tip front rifle sight.
Parkerized, metal trigger guard.
One piece, parkerized mag tube.
Bayonet lug to accept M7 & M9 bayos.

First impressions:

Action is nice and smooth. I oiled inside the action a bit and the slide arms which made the cycling soft as butter.
This thing is robust, and you can feel it in your hands. The sights are great, and the orange tip is quite obvious when acquiring a target.

I like the rear position of the slide release too. Very easy, very smooth. The safety is nice too, which I'm accustomed to since owning a Mossberg 464.

Shouldering it feels great to me personally. The LOP is long, but its very comfortable to me. I wanted a longer, weighty shotgun that I could abuse and bang around if need be. This is it.

I won't be adding any accessories to this gun, as I enjoy its simplicity.
I chose this model based on its bare bones features, even though it has the Speedfeed stock. It seems to hold and release shells well, but not sure I'll use it that often.
I do like the indent for your thumb on top of the grip area in front of your cheek position.
I honestly think it can't be improved. The stock feels great. Probably the best of all my 12 gauges, and ive always liked the corncob forend.
Plus, we know that this model passed US military tests and is in use by soldiers. So it was designed and fitted in this manner for a reason.
I like pistol grips and shell holders, I have them on other shotguns of mine. But not this one.
No lights, no lazers, no rails, no optics. No way, no how.

This model doesn't hang around long when its in stock, so I'm glad I jumped on it.

Next review will after its first trip to the range. Can't wait!

IMO...one of the best "Fighting SG's" right out of the box! Once you get a few rounds thru it the action will be very smooth.
Built like a tank but I wouldn't keep shells loaded in the Speed feed stock. There are stories on the Net that doing so has caused too much pressure on the springs and dislodging the butt-pad.

I have the same stock, and I only have one shell per side. With two shells pressing on a spring, they pop out when I fire anything heavier than target load. One per side seems fine to me, and I love the stock otherwise.

well I would not call that a base model, think it still needs a flashlight and a side saddle
Well, for the A1 it kinda is. The only extras are the sights and speedfeed. Remove those and that would be base model A1.
I also don't like stuff attached to my barrel or receiver. Side saddle on a stock is fine, but this girl don't need any makeup.

Yeah, seems one shell in each side will be fine. This stock feels great otherwise.

Add a new spring and follower from s&j it makes it cycle better, i also ported mine and added a mesa sidesaddle and jumbo s&j saftey with m9 bayonet. Not crazy but a couple of small improvements that will go a long way.

That's the exact same model I have. I sold the Speedfeed and forend and put a Magpul stock set on it. Way handier now.

I have a Magpul fitted shotgun as well, but find the Magpul feels better with a short a LOP. (So tempted to get a 18.5" 590A1 and equip it with FDE Magpul furn)
I like and prefer the factory configuration on my 20" 590A1 for use with a longer LOP.
I just can't gel with the MOE forend when the LOP is over 12" because the rear handstop sits at an odd angle against the side of my palm/wrist area. With a shorter LOP, the handstop functions as it should and rests against the full edge of my palm, under my pinky finger.

I'm new to parkerized finish. If there is a scratch on the finish, is it easy to touch up? I saw a 590A1 at a store but it had a big scratch on the barrel, wondering if I could get a lower price on it due to the scratch, but could touch it up inexpensively.

Im not entirely sure, but I don't think so. You could invest in a heatshield to cover the scratch, but onlyone for the 500 is avail. and requires some modification.

If it's all the way through to bare metal, a touch of old blue will at least hide it, if its merely scuffed then baking a bunch of grease into it, like you should be doing with virgin Parkerizing, should do it.

Parkerizing that's loaded with heavy grease is MUCH more scratch and corrosion resistant than when its dried out.

we carried them at work when I did armoured car work. These parkerized guns looked like hell in about 3 months. The finish scratched off them very easily and there were imperfections all over the guns. If you were to guess how old they were, you'd think they had been kicked around for 20 years, when they were only a few months old. The speed feed stocks caused lots of issues; we were instructed to place 2 extra rounds of buckshot in them, and guards would return from shift without the 2 rounds. It was a total waste of time, as people would be in the middle of their shift and realize they had lost the rounds, then be on a scramble to try and find them. tracing your steps back and hopefully being able to recover the rounds off the street or where ever.
A few of the stocks actually came loose, and I remember one gun in particular that someone got out of the truck and the stock was twisted sideways.
they are a great gun, but need a good once over and locktite.

Awesome gun! Got mine 2 days ago & love it! I got the blackwater edition.

Well stocks can be replaced and these are function guns, so looks are moot. Can't rain on this 590 parade!
