Hello again everyone.

So bought a 305 shorty last week and so due to this beautiful spring snow storm, I desided I wasn't gonna waste my time going to work (guess that's one perk to self employment)

Anyway got the itch to finally pull the trigger on the new girl.. She goes bang!... Once :( but does not cycle the next round.. Now I don't really know much about these rifles yet so any advice anyone has I'm a good listener! (I have read the sticks and such)

Now I took two shots from a bench rest at 45 yards first shot 8" left second shot 8" right.. Hmm now I know these rifles arnt always great shooters out of the box but please tell me I can expect better then that without any modifications..

Make sure your gas system is turned on, holding your rifle in front of you, buttstock to the left and barrel to the right the slotted screw head on the gas system should be turned up like this ( l ) diagonaly if its turned like sideways like this ( - ) horizontaly then the gas system is off and your rifle will not cycle the next round. another way to check this is to pull the op rod handle to the back of the receiver and tilt your rifle barrel up wards, the gas piston should slide back and you should be able to take a small allan wrench (1/16 size) and be able to stick it into the gas port on the bottom of the gas system it should be able to reach all the way up into the barrel, take a light and see if you can see it, if you cant then turn the gas valve the other way and try again. if it all seems good I would suggest a tear down and make sure everything is looking right and lined up. I would suggest going to youtube and searching "tony ben m14" he has full vids of how to tear each part of the rifle down.

I know this probably sounds like a dumb question, but did you completely strip the rifle and clean all the oil out? Particularly out of the gas system?
 
Im not being a smartarse and trying to insult you................is the gas turned on, it happens.
Your gun will do a hell of a lot better than that, just needs taking apart and straightening and tightening as per stickies, no cost other than time and dirty fingers.
Couple of hours at the kitchen table will work wonders. you should be around 2 inches or less at 45yds, possibly a lot better than that.
Until you straighten it out hold off on the shopping list.
Others will be along after supper no doubt :)

Thanks for the advice.. I will be holding out on buying anything until I know if done everything I can to get it shooting as well it can..
