Just curious as to what the typical hourly rate is for a gunsmith in BC. I've tried searching the forum, but the only one that had an hourly rate listed was from Ontario, and I know markets and rates can change dramatically from one province (and possibly community) to another. Just trying to get a feel for what I could be looking at, should things go down that road. Thanks.

A rebarrel job usually costs around $250, and any decent gunsmith should be able to do one in less than 2 hours at the most. Custom work beyond standard work is very, very expensive, and can only be found for cheap if done as a hobby or by a good friend.

What exactly are you trying to do that would require the work of a gunsmith?

When I used to do make stocks and do checkering it usually paid me about $5 an hour...

The kid had to take the dog fur into the vet.
They charge by each breath they take.
No chit, they have a device that counts the inhale of air.
Just hope they don't make a device to count them going out too.

Think in terms of a vehicle mechanic. Said mechanic doesn't get what the shop charges, of course. And neither will a smithy, if like guntech says, you can find one who is a real smithy(vs a retired CF weapons tech, for example, who thinks he's a gunsmith.) who will work for what you can afford to pay. Far better to send smithy work out. If you can find a working smithy who will take it.

That depends on what needs to be done to it. If all that needs to be done is finish a chamber or cut a full chamber than yeah 2 hours is more than enough. If the barrel needs threading or contouring or indexing then that price goes up. For a target gun that price goes up even further.

Right now I charge 250 to fit a barrel with no extra for fiddling with throats etc. I should charge more and I sure can't fit a barrel in 2 hours but on the other hand I have many world champions that I do work for that seem happy to pay my rates. Many of those that quote prices have never done quality work and are a buyer not a seller and not an international competitor as I have been. A price of 350 for quality work is not unreasonable in my opinion.

There are some that charge 700+ to thread chamber and fit a barrel to a gun and are more than glad to pay it for a competition rifle.

For a job like this it generaly isnt an hourly rate. It is a fuxed rate. To get their moneys worth out of it for the skill involved in doing it properly they would have to charge more than a car mechanic per hour. In ontario the avg hourly charge is $40 an hour because most gun owners butch if they are charged more.
