whats the better varmint calibre? .223 or .22-250?

Only 5 or 6 feet?! You are doing it wrong lol. Average is about 5 feet but there are some exploders that like to fly 10+ and in all directions.

Thats why Im thinking about making a faster little centerfire. heheh

Its very addicting trying to get those lil sucks to fly. lol

People who buy 223's always wonder about the 22-250. It doesnt work in reverse.

Nope. I burn half the powder, the varmints end up just as dead, and if yer marksmanship is reliant on a bigger cartridge case to hit something farther away, work on yer marksmanship instead of yer excuses.

Starting to change a bit now, but the .223 is available of the shelf with a better assortment of twist rates to choose from. No biggie if you don't mind chucking another couple hundred bucks into a custom barrel, but more guys don't than do.

If you can't hit it and kill it with a .223, buying a 22-250 is gonna really cause a lot of aggravation, rather than solve anything. But it'll be louder, and more expensive to feed.

Cheers
Trev

My best results were with 40gr vmax and 50gr nosler btips. The 53gr vmax is no slouch though either. Also 40gr hp work well. I really want to smack a gopher with the 30-06 for some reason lol.

22-250 for coyotes out to 400 yards

,223 for gophers

I can't see the bullet splash with the 22-250 (too fast) don't know if I hit the little bugger or not

53grainers are really good for yotes, but not so much for gophers. I have some 36gr VG's made up to try this weekend once the wind goes down for a day. I know a bunch of people couldnt get them to shoot in a 9 twist but I read that some could, so Im off to try myself to see if Ill get lucky. I hope so because I think theyll be fun for gophers. If not the 40gr vmaxes will be next to try.

Sorry for the lil derail

The title says it all. I'm trying to decide what varmint rifle to buy. Any thoughts?
Funny how so many offer advice w/o knowing what the rifle is going to hunt, where and how.

If you need a walking around rifle for coyotes maybe a deer with proper bullet, I'd say sporter 22/250 with 3x9 scope.

Just groundhogs ... 223. Lightweight sporter with 3x9 or HB with 12 power scope.
Those options would save you having to buy a whole new rifle.
In my neck of the woods you can't shoot anything bigger than a 270. I have the .30 cal rifles for hunting north of that restriction line.

I agree, I like the .223 over the .22-250 for groundhogs as you can see the hit better.

On the other hand I like the .22-250 better for coyotes as its better for holding on fur over 300 yards,

So I own both lol

I've been looking at the savage combos but I've heard different opinions. Scopes suck, axis is crap, etc..

I'm leaning towards a 223 as I can't see shooting further than 200-250 yrds max. Probably will take most shots between 100-150yrds.

If its Gophers....

Please don't forget the 22 Hornet, or 22K Hornet, for Alberta gopher entertainment.

It's a nice caliber with a lot less powder consumption than the 204 or 223. I have used the 204 & 223 when out on gophers but mainly use the 22 k hornet. No rim fire as they just don't "helicopter" a gopher like a center fire.:D

The 17 hornet is also a great round for the prairie gophers.

I like the hornet and bob. Although I don't own either at the moment, they have a reserved place in my safe. The 250 savage is also nice. The bob and 250 savage have killed everything from squirrels to moose.

i had the same Q a few years ago and went with a 223AI near 4000 fps with a 53 grain pill. almost 22-250 speed with half the powder
