Do shotguns fit in rifle cases?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I want to get a rifle and a shot gun. I'm thinking of how I will store them. There's those 2 long-gun cases available. Do shotguns fit in just as nicely as rifles do, or are they (e.g.) thicker/wider and need a different case?

Are you able to link to the cases you are considering?

Are you talking about a case strictly for storage? For transportation? Or for both?

For transportation I used to use hard cases exclusively. I now use soft cases for that. It is much easier to lug them around in soft cases.

Shot Gun cases are longer and slimmer .
Rifle cases are deeper as they need room for a scope.

I'll usually bring 2 shotguns out with me, I transport them both in a single rifle case. One of those cheap Flambeau hard cases from Crappy Tire. They fit fine, but a 28" barrel gun is about the limit. The longer barrel trap guns likely won't fit in most rifle cases.

I have a cheap flambeau case that fits a maverick 88 and rem 783 with scope.

I also have multiple of these cases. they go on sale at can tire often.
for $20 its hard to go wrong. I like the straight rectangle ones an not the rife shaped ones as it means i have more options for fit.

I would never put a +$2,000 set up in one but they are perfect for my $300-$800 guns

If the OP is thinking of storing his firearms in a case for long term storage , don't unless you want rust issues . It sounds like the firearms are non restricted , so put a trigger lock on them , clean and wipe them down with gun oil , and stand them in your bedroom closet out of sight . As far as cases for short term transport , soft cases are easier to handle ,and are pretty cheap in price .

The thought when I started the thread, was long-term storage for a very small collection of 2 firearms. Something like this:

The idea was either that, or a cabinet. The first reply here made me realize I hadn't really thought it through. If I have that single case for storage and transport, it means I kinda have a loose gun when the other is being transported. I don't mind getting a cabinet that is at home permanently. So I guess I'll get that.

So the transport of firearms to and from the store, and to and from a range... Should I get a single or double gun case? And what features should I get e.g. hard vs soft? It seems most people find soft cases easier to handle. Can the same soft case house a shotgun and a rifle (separately and/or together)?

Is leaving them in a closet less likely to cause rust issues? Why would a case cause rust issues? What about a cabinet (metal box) for rifles?

Depending on the gun and the moisture level in your residence, the rust thing may not be an issue.

To answer your question about the thickness of shotguns vs. rifles, that's not an issue for selecting a case. Some areas of some shotguns are pretty wide, such as the fore grip of a standard wood stock pump action, or the receiver of a semi-auto shotgun with a big charging handle. But a bolt action rifle with a closed bolt is also pretty thick around the bolt. But most will fit fine in terms of compressing the foam in in a typical hard case. What you really need to look out for more is the overall length. A 28" barrel on a semi or pump shotgun is a pretty long firearm. And putting a scope on a rifle adds to the "height", so you'd have to take that into account. Basically, I'd say for most long guns, it's the length and "height" you need to think about, not the side to side thickness.

I've never tried it, but I imagine that a shop wouldn't mind letting you take one of their cases up to the counter and have them show you what it looks like to put in, say, a 28" pump action and a rifle with a scope.
