«Must have» shotgun Chokes ?

Hey there !

Recently bought a 26'' barrel for a remg 870. Comes with 1 mod choke.
Getting ready for my first hunting season (will pass my course tomorrow) (maybe too short in time) but anyway.

Looking to hunt duck/poultry/turkey this year BUT maybe other games next year...

There is some «affordable» right now:
-Rifled
-Turkey extra-full
-full-lead or steel

What choke do I need to get ? What choke do YOU consider a must have ?

Cheers

As waterfowl season is right around the corner, that could be your first chance with your new purchase. Modified is an all around good option for that with steel shot (do not shoot steel out of a full choke), but my personal preference is for a Skeet2 which is a light modified. I see you are located in Quebec, so you might check out Londero Sports www.arcinter.com. They carry Trulock chokes which are great value for a quality choke. As for the other chokes, if you plan on Turkey, it doesn't hurt to have a turkey choke, again a Trulock "turkey" is an affordable choice. As for a rifled choke, in my opinion its a waste of money, and an IC choke will do just fine with rifled slugs and you can easily get away with a Skeet 2 choke as well (I guess you can see what my "must have" choke is lol).
On a side note, there are full chokes that are steel shot safe, however in my experience its best to test them out, which is not always easy, as too tight a constriction can lead to blown patterns and poor results while hunting. I'm sure other folks will chime in as well.
Good luck.

For upland I use Skeet or Improved Cylinder and lead shot.

For waterfowl, I use Improved Cylinder with steel shot. This produces a modified pattern & is perfect over decoys, be it over water or land.

For turkey, XF with lead shot.

I have been using a modified choke in my 20 ga 870 using # 7-1/2 lead shot for grouse for the last 25 yrs with good results. For me those colored front sites are just as important for having better success.
More open chokes for steel shot makes sense....

I don't hunt turkey, but for hunting IC and Mod are all that I really need .As for those colored front beads, that is the first thing that comes off of my shotguns if they come with one installed.

Upland I use mod in my Mossberg 20g, shooting #4 lead. Haven't missed much yet. Tried #6 shot, but found I got too much feather pull-through - #4 just makes vent holes, lol.

Nice 20 gauge 870 !!!

Remington sells a kit for the Express that comes with an I/C & Full choke. 19773 : REM® CHOKE 12GA EXPRESS BUNDLE - IMPROVED CYLINDER & FULL

Locally these sell for about $40, they also have a kit with the 2 chokes and sling swivels, but I can't find the part # at the moment. Adding a Skeet or Skeet II choke would give you everything you could possibly need to waterfowl, upland and clays.

Keep in mind that chokes perform differently with different loads. For high speed loads open chokes usually perform better and give better patterns.
If yo have to buy them I would go with extended ones (IC and Mod would be my choice). I also would avoid Terror chokes, they are produced by low quality steel and will swell into your barrel.

I use a Turlock skeet choke for most of my grouse hunting and a trulock skeet 2 (LM) for most of my waterfowling. Both chokes give surprisingly nice patterns out of my ugly express pump gun
