Ok, so I can only buy one first rifle to start practice shooting with. Which cartridge do recommend given that I am interested in:

1.) Plinking
2.) Small Game/Varmint hunting for pelts
3.) Somewhat cost conscious.

Any recommended brands&models would be helpful too. Thanks guys.

Just a friendly warning - once I bought my Savage .17hmr, I rarely use any of my .22 rifles anymore. Waaaay more fun to shoot varmints! The .17 costs 3-4 times as much to shoot.
Don't get me wrong, it is still fun to empty a 50 rounder with the 10/22 as fast as you can!

If only one I would pick up a CZ 452 American 22LR.

As stated the LR is much cheaper to shoot, and given your parameters likely a better fit. Note that neither is good for varmint hunting for pelts, for that you likely want a 223 although that becomes more expensive. Do you handload?

Then my opinion, take it for what you paid for it, is definitely the CZ American 22LR, whether it be the 452, 453 or 455.

It will give you wonderful accuracy, and with a cheap aftermarket kit also a wonderful trigger pull. It handles, and is constructed to the same standards as, a quality centerfire rifle.

great advise here, I agree 100%. Every new shooter needs a quality .22 to start with and I'm sure you'll keep the CZ forever. .17's are alot of fun, but get that one next! .22 is much much cheaper to shoot, and new shooters will shoot lots and will have much more "keeping the interest high" with a quality accurate rifle than a cheap crap gun.

Get the best 22lr bolt action sporter that you can afford!
Both Savage Mark II and CZ 452 are great rifles but get somthing better if you afford it.

These were my 3 rimfire plinkers 1 year ago:
  • a Ruger 10/22 22lr - sold because it's inaccurate compared to the bolt-actions rifles
  • a Savage 93R17 BTVS 17hmr - sold because of high 17hmr ammo cost
  • a Savage Mark II BTVS 22lr - looking to upgrade to a better bolt action ASAP

Buy the cheapest 22 you can find, dump a bunch of ammo down it

Buy the CZ 452 in 17hmr, once you do you will stick the 22 in a closet and never look at it again.

I am giving my 22 away because I have no intention of ever shooting it again

My Savage MKII BTVS has been fantastic and very accurate. It's the only Accutrigger rifle I wanted to keep. Is it better than a CZ? To be honest, I don't think so. But whatever floats your boat!

.22LR vs. .17HMR? Really apples to oranges, but yes, .22LR first. Worry about a .17 later on. There are some WICKED .22LR rounds you can buy now, including the CCI velocitors and stingers, that will keep you entertained.

22lr if you want to shoot cheap. 17hm2 if you want crazy accuracy and more speed then a 22lr. hm2 ammo costs ~$7-8 for 50.
If you look at the cz 455 you can get a 22lr, 22wmr and 17hmr barrel for it.
