0.3" Groups? Pull My Other Finger, It Has Bells On It...

Good thing I took pictures of them Gootch! Both groups were at 100 yrds.

This was a 3 shot group ( I still think I pulled the low one) but its 44 grain of 748 powder with a 155 amax.

And this was Varget powder, 46 grains, 155 amax and a 5 shot group.

I am now a convert to Varget powder. Say what you will about Remington's, but they still shoot well with the right load.

Not trying to be an A$$ but the bottom cluster of 5rds seems to be over 1" by my measurement???? Assume that wasn't your .556MOA group?

Just going off the screen and using the bullet hole marks for scale - on my screen, each bullet hole is 1/2" across. The outside to outside of the cluster is 1.75" so the C to C is 1.25".

[ my mistake, wrong math ]

Still a nice group...

:D This is fun!.

Gotta back the Buzzballer on this one Jerry. He used my calipers on it ! LoL
It did indeed shoot that one 5 shot he claims. Through snowflakes too.
The whoops of extasy where heard indoors, where us sane sportsmen were huddled around the stove.

Tomorrow, we find out if the vviking bedding job will bring some consistency.

So I must issue a small apology, I just remeasured that group and it is .62 Moa, must have been my savage math and measuring in the field. This is measured from exact middle to middle of the two outside holes with calipers as seen below.

And as such here is the rig.

*Disclaimer: The firearm pictured was rendered clear and empty of all ammunition. No savages were injured in the making of this post.*

I've had a number of Remingtons; three standouts in the group shot consistent under 1/2MOA groups at 200m, but only after serious load development. Many rounds, tinkering with seating depth and powder charges .2gr at a time.

One was a 700LTR, and the other, of all things, was a pencil-barreled Mountain Rifle in 7-08.

ETA: I should add that I've bedded and adjusted the trigger on every Remington I've owned. It's simple and the payoff is well worth the time.

I think I did, Buzz. I went to IMR 3031 and groups were cut in half. I am going to try Varget this weekend and hopefully get similiar results. Methinks this gun may be powder sensitive. Who knows? The trials continue.

That's great to hear glen! I'm very new to long range shooting and reloading but it is amazing how minor differences in loads can really change every thing!

We were just out on the range trying 10 different loads

I feel this one has real potential! The new Hornady 178 bthp rounds, 44 grains compressed of Varget. I called a bad pull on the 2nd lower round, but of 5, 4 are in the left hole. .132 Moa for the group of 4. Now I realize this is only one group and I did not have enough rounds to try for consistancy. I will update as I reload some more and get to try for some more groups.

Try some lapua factory loads.. Here's some shooting I did today, thought I was just "making brass" then this group came to the party, my jaw nearly hit the floor.. Couldn't do it again, best one after that was about .900 I think that group was with 178 grain factory loads

This is out of my rem 700 sps in 308

Yep. That's the exact same crap I was shooting before I went to 3031 boys. It was always the same too - two touching, and one wretched flyer that would open the group up to 1.5~2" and leave me spitting and cursing. No rhyme or reason to it either - sometimes it was the first shot, sometimes the third - and I am pretty good at calling flyers. Then I went to 3031 and the groups went down to .8 or thereabouts. I can't complain about that - I only have a 3-10X Swarovski on it and to start punching clover leafs I would need more magnification as my eyes are getting old and tired.

My next session will be with 180 nosler ballistic tips and Varget. This rifle is really odd in that velocities almost match the charge weights as spelled out in the manual. I have never had a rifle do that before. Not only that - but my little Remmy doesn't foul itself like my other guns. With my other guns if you fired 20 rounds - you would be pulling blue patches of copper solvent out until you gave up in disgust! With this rifle I have yet to see a blue patch - and I have run as many as 40 shots between cleanings. This little rifle is full of surprises.

Got out today and it was.... bad.

Best 3 shot was about .75-.85 but the rest (mostly 5 shot) were not great (1.25-1.75ish).

Nothing was feelings good so I chaulk it up to conditions, shooting positioning (wobbly table where I normally shoot prone) and myself. I will reload and retest again. I hope things improve!

I'm shooting 178 AMAX in a 1-10 twist and I'm starting to wonder if my selection was poor... Might try some 190's eventually and play around with fast 155's for fun.

Shibby try the 178 hornady BTHP. Great B.C. on them. Buzzballer got some great potential there, and with a one in ten twist might just work for ya..

Thanks for the heads up... Sadly I just finished ordering 600 of the bullets on top of my 100 I still have.... =(

I'm going to attempt to make them work yet. They were decent the one day and bad the next. Different lot of bullets so I'm wondering if .005 off lands has not turned into touching, among other things.

Need another test to confirm. My dummy round used a bullet from a different lot and I'm wondering if that might be my mistake. I did notice some contact marks on rounds I removed, but the bolt was never difficult to close. A few had slight resistance when pushing down, but not like I was hammering on it.

Loads were around or under published max's so I'm not too worried about pressures, but do want to find consistancy.

Son of a B... I get no credit for any of this? Come on Buzz, I wanna piece of the action too. Nice shooting today by the way. We are upgrading to BR2s and make that hole even smaller. Whatever math you use to determine it's exact size.

I remember the days I could just hold up my arms to illustrate the size of the fish and everybody believed you. Now you need friggin calipers.

Flattbed, I tried them 178s as well, but for me they shot like I was barfing up diced carrots. Back to the drawing board with some different powdas.
