00 Buck on deer

Thanks for all of the comments fellas! I have several rifles I can use. No worries there. I have a lot of old timers in my camp who swear by buckshot. I have never had the need to shoot a deer with a shotgun. I just thought it might be something different to try for a change. If I do. I think I will use slugs! Thanks a million fellas!

Senior. I lost those deer at around 35-40 yards. It was many years ago that this happened. One of those deer was found 2 weeks later in the swamp, dead. The farmer was out running his beagles and found it. I had mentioned it to him on the night I shot at it. I had a meagre at best blood trail which completely dissapeared after 50 or 60 yards out. The farmer even came out to help me look for the deer until 9 pm that night. We aren't allowed to use dogs to hunt deer around here. He waited until after shotgun season to take the dogs out for a run at the bunnies (we can use dogs for them though). I learned my lesson long ago about buckshot. I did take one last year with buckshot, first one in 10 years. My daughter was born 2 days before the opener. I had no slugs in the house, (another lesson learned), so I went and purchased some 3" 000. I sat in one of my archery stands where my longest shot might be 20 yards. I now shoot sabots only.

the ol' people swear by it, partially because they're used to being right.

I got into a debate once and told them about the clear advantage that the sulg offers. They never argued, but explained that they way I was thinking of using the buckshot is wrong. It was supposed ( they said) to be shot specially at running game, and aimed ath the front legs, from up close only, followed by a lively walk to the game and finishing it....

Weather this is true or not, I do not know, as I never used buckshot on anything but paper so my experience is less than limited.
Things changed a little bit as far as the hunting ethics in the past years, and the tradition of using buckshot / was largely used in Europe until a few years back... they hunt mostly drives.... it makes more sense that way.

thebuckhunter: The camp next to us has an ongoing arguement which goes like this...one guys lost a deer once because he claimed the standard Rem bullet didn't preform well (never found the deer) he now uses only premium bullets :) the other guy swears he lost a deer because the premium bullet (partitions) he was using went right thru (never found the deer)! The moral I'm getting at is I hope everyone is not baseing there theorys on a single event, after all I wonder how many guys could step in & tell about the deer that went straight down with buckshot!
