hello fellas since i bought my 590a1 i've noticed 00 buck comes in shells with different amounts of pellets, for defense purposes is more or less? the better way to go...thanx men

00 buck is .33. There are 9 or 12 pellets. I have some 3 inch winchester 00 bucks that have 15 pellets I believe.

My 590a1 just loves Federal Premium 2 3/4 00 buck 9 pellet. Patterns beautifully. So for me that's what I prefer for defense.

If you kids or family in the next room, then a fine bird shot is probably best for home defense as it won't penetrate the walls as much and kill your wife, or kids... Or pet parrot that cost you two grand...

There isn't any real secret to it, a certain sized hull will only hold a certain amount of shot, buckshot or otherwise, from a physical as well as pressure standpoint. That means 9-00 buck in 2 3/4" and usually 12 in 3".

For defense purposes against a human aggressor, the answer gets a little muddy. While it is always good to put as many pellets as possible on target, other factors come into play when a shot is made in a populated area. You are legally, ethically, and morally responsible for any projectile(s) you send down range. Knowing how your load patterns at specific ranges is critical. Many LEOs are now required to carry only low velocity buckshot loads as the lower pressure and buffered shot results in tighter patterns and better shooting due to reduced recoil, while other departments have dropped the shotgun altogether in favor of .223 or 9mm auto carbines. The difficulty with the very tight pattern from the LEO buckshot loads is that rifle type marksmanship is required, as these shells can produce head size patterns at 25 yards. A solid hit is a decisive hit, but a miss is a complete miss.

If defense is wildlife related, I opt for the 00 load my gun will pattern the best and put the most pellets on target, which in the case of my 590 is Federal's 3" Premium 00 Buck load and I keep a few of these in my Side Saddle to compliment my Brenneke slug loads. I can keep all the pellets from this load on target at 25 yards. But every shotgun barrel is a law unto itself, so don't assume that Federal Premium is best for your gun; buy a variety of ammo, and see which patterns the best for you from 5 yards out to 30.

If you are only shooting targets get a box or two of Managed recoil Buck shot, I have found it is the only Buckshot load that patterns reasonably well out of my guns. Go to your local ammo shop and ask for a box of each brand and pattern your gun at whatever range you anticipate you shooting at then taking price/availability and performance into account select what works best for you.

Reduce recoil patterns tighter for me as well. I think they come 8 or 9 rds depending on the load.

For animal defence, I prefer slugs.

Firstly I've been hearing a lot about people having good experiences with Federal premium buckshot. Does anyone know if they use the new Flitecontrol wad in these loads?
I'm thinking of picking some up as it's impossible to get Law enforcment Buck in these parts and I don't want to pay Courier Fees.

On the second point. NO

I have SERIOUS doubts that birdshot will put someone down. If you're looking at it from a physics standpoint, those little pellets don't have enough mass to penetrate far enough into an assailant. It would leave a NASTY looking surface wound, but it's very unlikely that it would do anything more.

If someone is set on harming you, and you hit them with birdshot, they'll probably keep coming.

At close range, birdshot is devastating. On soft tissue inside 10 yards, you will not be able to tell the difference between birdshot, buck or a slug. I have seen the bodies to know firsthand. At that distance, the pattern has not opened up and there is 1 1/8 oz mass hitting at full velocity over a small area. It will definitely do the job. Seen it.

Note: The newer federal tactical buckshot are slightly longer (crimped) than other shells. Not allowing you to fully load the 590 magazine as the little differences add up after 8 shells.

This is found in pretty much all of Federal's buckshot. I can only fit 5 3" Fed shells while every other brand I can fit 6 in the tube of my 870.

"...the better way to go..." More, but the felt recoil increases with the weight of shot. '00' buck isn't the best size either. Four buck(6mm) has more shot in the same size cartridge. 41 of 'em in a 3" mag.
Just remember that if you use a firearm for self-defence, you will be charged.

Unless that person is trying to kill you or your family. And you were afraid for your life. The Crown will have to prove otherwise in order for you to be charged.

This guy knows what he's talking about. I'll take his word for it!
