Is it ok to use 00 cartridges (lead shot) in a full choke barrel. Also , any experiences of damage caused to the gun by using steel shot in older full choked barrels.??

Lead buckshot you will be fine I can tell you from experience

Steel I’m not sure, as some choke sizes are only rated for certain sized steel shot as they do not compress like lead if neeeded through a choke.

Just for example one of my full chokes says no bigger steel shot than BB at a certain FPS (can’t remeber what the FPS was)

00 Buck will not hurt a full choke gun, but as whenever a different load, or brand of load is fired in your gun, patterning the new load to determine it's pattern characteristics is beneficial. Similar loads from different manufacturers will pattern differently, and different loads from a single manufacturer will pattern differently when fired in the same barrel.

Steel shot is less compressible than lead shot, but I don't believe the gun would be "damaged" by using it, in that you're unlikely to experience a split barrel or something of that nature. More likely the choke will expand with use as the choke is swaged open, so your full choke gun will begin printing modified patterns, or worse, the pattern will be less dense and possibly donut, or begin printing in a linear fashion.

Thanks Guys. It is as I suspected, but my son in law is Goose hunting over fields, not wetlands and I told him to be sure to use lead shot. The guns my grandson and he will be using are guns I gave him and they are too good to risk any damage due to wrong loads. I personally only Grouse hunt these days so haven’t any first hand experience.!!!

No, no, no, hunting migratory game birds with lead shot is illegal, and if checked by a CO he'll be charged, fined, and risks loosing the gun, and his hunting privileges. Its a pretty big deal.

Very inaccurate advice and you better let him know before it's too late.

Man I would not want to hit a goose with 00 lead with a full choke
I can just about cut a coyote in 1/2 with it . Cannot imagine what would be left of a goose if it was legal to use and it's not
Cheers

I read on the interweb ones trigger will fall off if they shot OO Buck through a Full Choke SKS.
Kidding aside have you (the OP) done any research via google or bing before asking the question?
Because if everyone say X size steel shot is good to go and you try it and the results are the trigger falls off who is right and what went wrong?
Most Factory firearm web sites publish information to make an informed decision and not second hand advice.

Migratory bird hunting is federally regulated, you are not allowed to use lead shot regardless of where you are hunting. That being said, even if it didn't hurt the gun, you would have terrible patterns with a full choke and BB shot, I use at most a Mod choke with BB and in the past have used IC choke with good success. The tighter choke with large steel shot destroys your pattens.

Unfortunately those old full choke water fowl guns are not of much use for hunting any more. You can buy a 870 or Mossberg 500 with chokes for a few hundred bucks and have a reliable waterfowl gun

You can shoot any factory manufactured lead shot or slugs out of any factory choke you desire.

Steel is a different story. Steel requires a more open choke for best patterns and in older guns tight chokes and steel is a safety concern as well.
