.001 copper wire

Slide around to a local hobby shop that has radio control model stuff. They'll have a scrap of the super flexible wire in around 12Ga that has literally hundreds of strands. I just measured a piece of this and the single strand is 0.0025". And trust me, that's pretty well as skinny as you're going to want even for a cross hair wire. At least from the broken scopes I've had apart the wire strand seems like a good match. Or it may even be too thin. 2.5 thou is REALLY small already. And I do have some .001 nichrome here and it's so small that unless the light hits it just right or you're looking at it on a white paper it's pretty well invisible.

Thought I'd share what iphone wire (.001) looks like.
Sorry for the low quality pic, just held my cel up to the eye piece.
It actually looks pretty good and clear in real life for a 82 yr. old scope.
You'd never know 2 out of the 5 lenses has a lot of chips in the glass.

When I replaced the crosshairs in one of my old scopes I used a single strand of thread that I unwound from a piece of nylon sewing thread used for upholstery manufacture. This thread is so strong that I could not break it with my bare hands. I glued it in place with super glue and its held up perfectly for a few years now.

2 reasons, dental floss is hard to find in a shooters home, lol.
And its translucent resulting in a fuzzy line.
Scope wire can be purchased.

Actually the hairs we did back in 69 and into the 70's using a single strand of unwaxed floss appeared just fine in a 6 power scope...
