Took me 5 years to get my 2nd Archery Moose but it was worth the wait....

Oct.1st. Wed. Morning called. Bull came in within 1 hour. 6 Yards/6 paces away. Broadside shot. He was running in and caused hit a little too far back. Ended up being a liver shot. Arrow was sticking out side of his ribs. Heard him go back in bush and thought he went down. Decided to leave him for 1 hour. Went for 2 mile round a bout walk to trail around to the south of direction he left in to see if he made it back across. Was creeping down trail and seen another BIG bull. Had bow drawn and ready to shoot. 20 yards broadside. Could NOT see arrow sticking out side so decided to let him go. GPS'd and found I was only .4 miles from where other bull was....and thought OH crap he was THE one and I let him go.

Went back to look for Bull. Could not find him and found my arrow broke half off and really got worried!!!!(thinking that the other bull was same one). NO blood trail at all which was terrible. I thought (by sound) he went RIGHT but he actually went to left. Tried to go through bush 2 times and could not find him. I ended up trying to follow his tracks. There was not a drop of blood trail. Tried to track as best I could through leaves and jungle bush. Was able to get a bearing on his path and found him less than 100 yards from where he was hit.

Arrow had hit rib dead center which prevented pass-through shot and caused no blood trail. He had completely bled out inside and liver was shredded by broadhead.

Broadhead twisted inside him and when he fell down it went into part of his guts....MESSY!

Bow was 72 pounds and fixed blade 4-blade Slick Trick broadhead.

The Bull I took 5 years back was 40 inchs and a little smaller body wise, but I used a different broadhead( 3 blade Wasp 125 Hammer) the bow was same and arrow weight similar but that shot was complete pass through and amazing blood trail. Needless to say I will go to back to 3 blades for next year.

Took us until 5 PM to get him out of the bush. The RANGER really came in handy as single quad would not even get him moving.

Measured 47 inchs widest spread.

Congrats on the bull and thanks for the story and the info on which broadhead you used. Tracking an archery shot moose this time of year can be extremely hard. The search for a broadhead for moose that Im happy with still continues. From my personal experience with moose and elk (shot by myself, brothers and friends) there seems to be a big difference in penetration depending on whether a rib is centered on entry or not. Im starting to lean toward a total second archery setup for moose (as opposed to deer, 3D etc), heavier arrows, big peep sight, large bright sight pins, cut to tip broadheads and as much draw weight as I can comfortably handle. I am currently shooting razorcaps and was hoping to try out a steelforce phathead this year but didnt get a chance. We had several bulls calling but none came within range. Thanks again for the story and the info!

Good tracking job and well done in leaving him for an hour before following up. That is the hardest thing to do, I always have to talk myself out of following right away.

I took an elk on Friday with a high hit; second hardest tracking job I have had - only 3 blood marks on branches in 150 yards, very dry so tracks were near impossible to follow.

Congratulations on a nice bull.

Thanx guys....:dancingbanana:

We were examining the Wasp Hammer SST and comparing it with the SlickTrick.(both 125 gr)

The only reason I switched from Wasps is that the SlickTrick was far more shorter profile and much more accurate. Also the Wasp blades did NOT hold their edge very well.

The Bull 5 years ago had 1 Blade contact rib on way it and 2 blades hit ribs on way out. The 1 blade had its edge curled right over so we de-duced that it hit the rib and turned/rolled off the rib and went through easier. The base was also 1/16 inch larger all the way around then arrow diameter. The Chisel tip on the Wasp is smaller and has more sweep to it making it pentrate better.

The SlickTrick blasted right through most of the rib. We thougth the extra 4th blade may have prevented it from deflecting off the rib.

I am positive if I had higher KE that SlickTrick would work excellent.

For lower KE set-up and larger bodied animals I would say 3 blade fixed or 2 blade would work better.

If I was shooting 72 lbs@30 inch draw(I shoot 27 inch) I probably would have blasted the SlickTrick right through.

1 other difference was the Wasp shot was with 3 feather fletchings and SlickTrick was with 4 Blazer fletchs so the plastic fletching may have impeded where is the feathers lay down flat along the shaft of the arrow.

I can ONLY HOPE I get a chance to re-experiment next year.....

I am a big believer in cut-on-impact broadheads, such as the Zwicky. I switched to vanes from feathers this year and knew that I was compromising the ability to stabilize a broadhead, so I decided to try the "new style" heads like the slick tricks. After some discussion with the local archery shop owner, I decided to try Sharp Shooter's from WASP; they are a cut on impact style. So far, so good. One elk down, marginal shot due to the bull jumping forward at the shot and poor yardage estimation, but I hope to connect on another couple of deer with this set up before the end of the season.

Phucken' eh brother!!!! Congrats!! I am laid up with a back injury right now, so I have to live vicariously through your stories until the Dr. gives me the green light.

Awesome moose.

Had RIBEYE steaks last night for supper.....hmmm....tastey and fairly tender....But IMHO still not as good as marbled beef(Black Angus is still the best steak).

Had some meat spoilage in neck/hump area on 1 front quarter. Likely from heat and NOT getting that area split and cooled as quickly as possible.

Will know better for next time. Un-seasonable HOT this Fall. Temperatures were getting close to +20 Celcius when getting him out of the bush. NEVER experienced those kind of temps while Moose hunting before...let alone when trying to deal with a carcass in those temps.

Cheers to all....thanx for the kind words...and GOOD LUCK on a successful hunt this Fall!
