I'm a huge fan of 1oz load in the 12ga for clay target shooting mainly trap. Actually I use alot of 7/8oz and lighter loads aswell when shooting skeet and sporting clays. I like the extra speed out of them you can get and still have a good pattern along with lighter recoil. I also reload most of our ammo and the 1oz loads do save some $$$ too.
What do you guys prefer..... why and for which game?

I've got a bit of arthritis in my shoulder so the lighter kicking 1oz loads just feel better to me. They don't make a difference to my skeet scores, and i get a few more loads out of a bag of shot.

If you like light loads you'll probably like the light 3/4oz and 5/8oz 12ga loads I've been shooting on the skeet field. I'm just trying to get my chronograph back from a friend and I'll be starting a thread about them. You want low recoil these have none.

I like the 7/8oz. # 8 loads for the bulk of my target shooting, using load data around the 1325 fps range. Do however carry some extra 1-1/8 oz # 7-1/2's ( 3 dram , 1200 f.p.s.) to use when I see extra long targets, rabbits at 30 yds. +, long crossers from a high tower, distant battues, etc. - 8's of any sort generally do not seem to give me consistant breaks much past 35 yards.
Yes, they will break targets further out, but I seem to score better with the 7-1/2's at distance. ( Guess that's why a lot of the good 27 yd. "back fence boys" seem to like them ! )
The 7/8 oz. #8's work very well for skeet, 16yd. trap, 5 stand and the majority of Sporting Clays.
Factory Federal Paper 24gr. plated 7-1/2's for International Trap, thanks !

....One ounce (28 gram) is the right way to go now that F.I.T.A.S.C. has changed their rules to mandate the use of this load for both COMPAK and Parcours....

I've been using 1oz. #8 for Sporting and Trap for about 15 years. While I'm not a competitive shooter I still like crushing those clays. Less recoil; more loads per bag of shot; less lead in the field; what's not to like! My loads chug along about 1200fps and seem to deliver HARD hits out to 35-40 yds. For Skeet I shoot 24gram #9's exclusively. My score hovers around 90% in all disciplines .

I'd rather give up a little shot in return for either reduced recoil or higher speed. 1 ounce at at 1300-1350 is my load of choice for trap and sporting.

1oz loads have seemed to do all I could ask. If I'm shooting good, they break targets just fine. I even use them for my 2nd shot on doubles. I have been using #8's as they are readily available and cheap at $20 a bag. If I could get 7.5's that cheap I might switch.:)

I've used nothing but 1 oz. loads for years. However, now that my wife and daughters have started doing a little informal trapshooting,I'm thinking about trying out some 7/8 oz. loads for a little bit more recoil reduction. It doesn't hurt that you save a penny or two as well.My price for new shot has recently climed to $25 a bag.

7/8oz works great at 16yrds and last year my son even shot them at 21yrds. I've been shooting some 3/4oz loads at skeet and been playing with some 5/8oz aswell. I know what you mean with saveing on shot. Out local shop wants $28 a bag for chilled shot. I'm lucky I can still get it across the river for $17 US for Remington STS.
