1/2-28 vs 1/2-36

I want to thread my .357 lever action rifle for a muzzle brake, I see some commercially made 9mm brakes made for either 1/2"-28 or 1/2"-36. Is either one more appropriate for my purposes, or will one limit my options?

1/2-28 is the more common thread size, so -36 will limit your choices. -36 is 'fairly' common for 9mm rifles though. YMMV

Either will require precise threading... the 36 tpi even more so...

I have access to a good lathe and as much or more experience cutting threads as anyone else in my shop. I can cut the thread. My question is whether either pitch will gain me anything.
If all things are considered equal, I will choose the 1/2-28 as I already have taps to make my own brake.

1/2-28 for sure. Being the most common gets you the most variety. Boring out a .223 /5.56 muzzle device of your choosing should be easy for you opening up even more choices.

It's a pretty precise job, just like chambering, if you want it done right.

1/2x36 is used a lot on PCC muzzle brakes to stop people from screwing on the more common 1/2x28 which are mainly seen on 223/5.56. Either will work but remember to clearance the exit hole 20 thou bigger than the bore dia.

1/2 36tpi will gain you more wall thickness, if you need it.

And a brake on lever is blasphemy
